Season premiere! Thank goodness for Tyra keeping it fresh as always! She pulled the biggest trick on the top fourteen this season! Tyra wants to make cycle 16 as real and as high fashion as possible, and one thing that the biz is all about is REJECTION. Models face rejection everyday, sometimes many more than once in a single day! Tyra decided to give the top fourteen a harsh dose of reality. Okay, so twenty-eight girls were brought for what they thought was going to be a normal casting week. They showed off their swimsuit bodes, walked the walk for Miss Jay as soon as they got off the airplane, but just when they thought it was time to mingle, the judges were already picking their top girls! Mister Jay walks over to them and gives everybody an envelope and says if its got their picture in it, they’ve been chosen. Of course the camera is focusing on all the girls who didn’t get in, they’re devastated that they’ve been rejected. So off they go to get their bags, moping about having to go home so soon, and then they hear that Tyra wants to come say goodbye because she hates sending girls home. So Tyra comes in at the top of these stairs and she starts telling the girls that in the modeling industry they have to face rejection everyday, but they can’t give up because of it. They girls are embarrassed, nodding, very sad, Tyra tells them its time for them to go home, but they don’t have to go very far! What looks like a wall turns out to be some paper sheet that falls down and the top fourteen are in their penthouse home! Tyra hangs out long enough to explain, and also threw in the tidbit that all the pictures of her in the house are of when she was sixteen in honor of cycle 16. These girls were in shock! One model even fell to the floor! There was crying and screaming, it was happy moment. That didn’t last long though…
Okay, so fast-forward a little bit, Tyra mail says lets get the ball rolling, and after the surprise the girls know to expect the unexpected, but they never expected what they found when they arrived at their first runway show. They had to walk, down a narrow runway, over water, in a plastic bubble. Yes! In a plastic bubble! There was tons and tons of tripping but only two girls actually fell. Its a pool, but you still expected them to sink… this bubble they were in kept them afloat however, but watching this ball spin in the water while they were trying to get back up was part hilarious and part nerve-racking. Ondrei was the first to fall, thankfully she wasn’t hurt, but getting back up on that runaway must have been really difficult as she fumbled around a bit, but she did get herself back up and was able to finished her exit walk. Dominique also fell, but she went with it, making fun of herself and posing as she tried to get back up on the runway. She did another pose before finishing her exit walk, it was really awesome that she could just go with it without panicking and it seemed like she made a connection with the audience by making them laugh. Britanni was the best at the bubble walk, that bubble was her b-i-t-c-h, Mister Jay was very impressed.
Once the girls got back to their house from this nutty runway show, they all realized that someone was to go home tomorrow. The girls sat chatting it up and talking amongst themselves, while over on their living room runway, Alexandria is trying to teach Jaclyn how to runway walk. Some of the girls thought “okay whatever” and sweet little baby-face Jaclyn is following her like a puppy. She said she felt like Alexandria was her mother, trying to show her the ropes and everything. Thankfully, panel was all about the photos that got taken behind the scenes during hair and makeup, and not the runway ball walk. Angelia ended up going home this first week, and you know what?… Personally, I was okay with that. Her picture was really not that great, she had so much hair in front of her face, and the judges agreed she did not look like a model but just a really pretty lady. A couple of my favorite pictures were Molly, Alexandria, and Hannah. Alexandria was arching her back over her makeup chair and it was a beautiful profile picture. Molly (Her top photo shown left) had this gorgeous three/fourths profile and she just popped. Hannah’s best picture was when all the girls were huddled together looking at the camera, she stood out even though she was surrounded, it was beautiful. (My apologies if I’m talking about the wrong people, I’m still learning all the names.) This name I know for sure though, Britanni’s picture was the runner up for best photo, but honestly I didn’t love it like the judges did. She’s in the middle of this model makeup technique and the picture looks good but I just don’t see the modeling in it. I guess I shouldn’t dwell…
Alright, lets get to talking about the girls themselves. I have already to begun to pick out a couple of my favorites, and I’ll be the first to say that my favorites might not be the best beauties of the group. We can’t deny that Molly, Alexandria, and Monique are a few of the most pretty girls there. At least I can’t, but they’re not who I’m gravitating to personality wise. One of the girls I started to like as soon as she opened her mouth is Mikaela. I thought her picture was gorgeous and I completely agreed with the judges when they told her she looked like the new star in the photo and that she was very present. In deliberation though, my opinion and Erin Wasson’s opinion clashed terribly, Erin thought Mikaela might be meek and that she didn’t see her personality in the photo. You know when the girls take turns with the camera and talk about whats going on? When Mikaela started talking about how she didn’t like that Alexandria was trying to give Jaclyn advice, but she thought Jaclyn’s personality was adorable-I saw a lot of personality. I understand that its the beginning and she might still need to show off her fire to the judges, but this girl caught my attention big time. Where Alexandria is all hardcore, ‘I’ma do me and too bad if you don’t like it’ and another girl is preppy, happy to be here, friends with everyone fake, Mikaela is a real person. She’s here to kick butt, but at the same time she looks at everything with a real worldview instead of some over-the-top rebel or overwhelmingly giddy happy-go-luck. This is only the first episode of course and I’m trying to keep my eye out for everybody. I kinda want to see more of Hannah, Dayla, Kasia, and Sara. Yes I want to cut off that rattail too, but she’s the quirk of the bunch and I would love to see what her mind could come up with. Tyra already said the rat is gone if she makes it to makeovers, so I’m not worried about that! I’m really looking forward to getting to know the girls more. I really hope Jaklyn sticks around for awhile, I personally find her pep infectious. Of course we have to wait and see as the season progresses who really wants this and who will fade into the background.
