Update: Deadline is now reporting that Christina, who will be off touring, and CeeLo, who will be making two albums, will sit out of Season 4 of THE VOICE. They are, however, expected to return next fall. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine will be on tap with Usher and Shakira for Season 4 this winter. Mark Burnett has released the following statement
“Having award-winning artists as coaches means they need to be able to tour,” said executive producer Mark Burnett. “Whether in the red chair or on tour, our coaches have their chairs for life. This is exactly why, after three seasons, we needed to allow them to rotate out so they can get on the road amongst their fans. Meanwhile, we’re incredibly excited to have singular artists like Usher and Shakira joining the fold.”
Season three just kicked off last week with a super-sized 3 night premiere, but rumors around season 4 are already popping out. According to internet reports, Shakira and Usher are indeed nearing deals to get a red chair of their own for Season 4 of THE VOICE, expected to air Jan 2013. While it is unclear whether 2 of the show’s current coaching staff will be off for Season 4, it is no secret that both Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera have expressed disappointment in the show airing twice a year, as it interferes with their career goals. Shelton feels that he has no time to tour, while Aguilera, who has an album due out soon, wants to devote more time to her music.
During a recent interview with Billboard, Christina noted that The Voice has “kept me away from my heart, which is creating my own music.” While Christina noted it has been a joy to be a part of the artist’s lives on the show, she needs “a minute” to get to her own projects. She does not rule out coming back as a coach if she took a season off. She continued, “I just need to do my thing for a minute then I can come back and be that much better of a coach. I just need a second to get back to me.”
NBC and Exec. Producer Mark Burnett have actually been very clear that a job as a coach on the hit competition series should not be a permanent position but that the door is always open for the artists they currently have in those red chairs. Paul Telegdy, NBC President for Late Night and Alternative Programming, noted that the coach’s “authenticity, relevance and credibility are all wrapped up in what they do and how they define themselves, which is as active, relevant touring musicians. That may mean a seat on the panel becomes available.”
The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that while Shakira and Usher may be nearing deals to be coaches for Season 4, no comments have been made from NBC’s camp or the artist’s respective camps. However, with The X Factor adding Britney Spears and Demi Levato and American Idol solidifying the new panel of Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, it is no surprise The Voice will continue to look for current and relevant superstars to help choice future hopefuls on the show.
What do you think? Would Shakira and Usher make good coaches? Which of the current four do you think might stick around or might we see an all new panel for Season 4? Is it still a good move for The Voice to air twice a year? Sound off below and in our forums!
