SAG Awards: ‘Twas A Night of Surprises

SAGAwards2011As but a bridge between the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards, Hollywood takes another night out the beginning of the new year to sit back, relax and honor themselves. Except tonight, they take it to a literal level. The Screen Actor’s Guild Awards takes votes from the actors themselves to honor their peers and colleagues in the industry. Homeland and Modern Family led the night for television with four nominations apiece, but it was a night of firsts and a couple of upsets. Downton Abbey toppled over some television drama favorites, while Modern Family became the first ensemble cast to win three years in a row. (Seinfeld has also won three SAG Awards, but they were not consecutive wins). Jennifer Lawrence edged out over favorite Jessica Chastain, and in a surprise to many, Bryan Cranston won his first SAG Award. Taking home film’s biggest award tonight?  Check out the full list of winners below.

Next stop: Academy Awaards, February 24 at 8/7c on ABC!

NBC Celebrates Betty White’s 90th Birthday (Again) In All-New Special

betty_whiteWe always knew Betty White can do it all, but did you know that the Golden Girl can turn 90 not once but twice? That’s right. The “Betty White’s 2nd Annual 90th Birthday Special” will air in just a few weeks on NBC. After a ratings success for the last celebration, it appears NBC didn’t want to let this opportunity slip by. In fact, Betty won’t turn 90 again. Or will she? In all seriousness, this special is to celebrate Betty’s 91st birthday, but it just doesn’t sound as catchy as her second 90th. Let’s face it.

Joining Betty White on this special are a number of major name stars. According to an NBC press release, Blake Shelton, Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Hayes, Rico Rodriguez, Lily Tomlin and Sarah Silverman will honor America’s comedy sweetheart, along with Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States. Also on hand to deliver birthday wishes will be Vicki Lawrence –reprising her popular title role from “Mama’s Family” — Katie Couric and White’s “Hot in Cleveland” co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick, as well as Zachary Levi, Larry King and Kate Flannery.

The special will include clips chronicling Ms. White and her illustrious career, as well as a performance from Blake Shelton written just for the guest of honor.

The special airs Feb 5 at 8/7c, followed by the special two-hour season premiere of SMASH at 9/8c on NBC!

CBS Announces Premieres for “Big Brother 15,” “Unforgettable” Return & “Under The Dome”

cp_cbs_yak_logoDuring Saturday’s session for the TCA 2013 conference, CBS announced their summer plans in front of the television critics. Summer is starting early on CBS this year, as evident by the premiere dates for the sophomore season of the recently resurrected Unforgettable, an expanded 15th season of summer staple Big Brother and Stephen King’s mini-series Under the Dome.

King’s series will kick off June 24 at 10/9c. CBS President Nina Tassler touted her hopes of the event becoming a “big summer event.” “What we heard was this extraordinary vision for 13 episodes and beyond, we have a unique opportunity here to do a big summer event and to do a script to series. [During the] summer, you have to make some noise, and we really wanted to this summer. We’ve got a lot of fresh, great content.”

The network also announced that “Unforgettable” will premiere its second season on Sunday July 28 at 9/8c and reality show The Great British Bake Off kicks off May 29 at 8/7c. “Big Brother 15”, which will be getting an expanded season, kicks off Wednesday June 26 at 9/8c. The show will air Sundays at 8/7c (starting June 30), Tuesdays at 9/8c (starting July 2) and live evictions on Wednesdays at 9/8c (starting July 3). Effective July 2, NCIS: LA will air encores at 10/9c to make way for Big Brother. Also, note that Big Brother 15 will shift to 8/7c on Wednesdays beginning July 17.

#cutforbieber: Excuse Me, America. We’re doing WHAT For Bieber Now?!

bieber
Justin Bieber

For those of you not familiar with Twitter, let me quickly run over what a TT or Trending Topic is. You can limit your search from your own city to state to country to internationally. Right now, Monday afternoon, #cutforbieber is trending. That means, there is a HEAVY discussion about this tag going on in the United States right now.

If you’re anything like me, curiosity can sometimes kill the cat. In this case, curiosity makes me lose hope for humanity. If you have been keeping up with your celebrity pop dirt news (which thankfully YY doesn’t cover), you might know that pop star Justin Bieber has been caught smoking pot. In fact, a paparazzo lost his life trying to snag photos of the teen heartthrob in the act. But we won’t even touch that part of the story.

Let’s fast forward to today when fans of the Biebs have come up with a new way to combat his new habits. What exactly are we cutting for Bieber, you ask? Our wrists. That is right. A good part of his fan base has taken to posting pictures of slitting their wrists on Twitter and other social media site to get the pop star to ditch his new girlfriend, Mary Jane. For your sake, I will not be posting any of those pictures here, but excuse me?! Hold the mother trucking phone?! First of all, what is this going to accomplish? Is slitting your wrist really the solution to get Justin Bieber of all people to stop smoking marijuana?

First of all, Bielibers (or however you spell that), this is a VERY serious condition that many people – young and old – struggle with. It is not something to make light or just pick up on the whim to try and reach out to your favorite pop star. To make light of this situation or even just endanger yourself for him is pathetic. Yes, I said it. Pathetic.

Now, many Bieber fans are also taking to Twitter to claim that this all started with trolls who don’t like Bieber and that Bieber fans are really not doing this. Well, as pathetic and lame THIS alternative is, I sure hope this is the truth.

How about, oh I don’t know? Boycotting the Biebster and his music if you really feel strongly about it? Don’t request his music? Don’t download his tracks? Stop watching his YouTube videos? THAT might get your message across and you’re not endangering your life in any way in the process.

I implore you to please stop this and to stop it now. Slitting your wrists is NOT safe, healthy or a good idea by any stretch of the imagination. If this is a problem you are struggling with personally, please sit down and talk to someone about it. Your parents, a doctor, a clergy member in a place of worship. Someone. This is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly – by Bieber fans or anyone else.

Billboards Announces Top Selling Albums and Songs of 2012

21-AdeleDepending on where your heart aligns with music, 2012 was either an excellent year or a terrible year musically for you. That’s the beauty of music. Billboard, early Thursday, announced the top selling albums and songs of 2012, based on their records and compilation of sales. Longevity is all that matters in the eyes of Adele fans, as “21,” although released in 2011, was the top selling album of 2012 with 4.41 million records sold. She took home the honor in 2011, as well. Rounding out the Top 10 was Jason Aldean’s, “Night Train.”

Sales were compiled from Jan 2, 2012 and ended on December 30, 2012. Billboard notes that “21” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart way back on the list March, 21, 2011. It has yet to leave the tally and has never been absent from the weekly top 40. Trailing behind Adele, in the No. 2 spot, was “Red” by Taylor Swift (3.11 million sold), which is pretty significant seeing that the album was released in October 2012. It’s the fourth time Swift has had an album ranked among a year’s top three sellers. Also making the list were One Direction, Justin Bieber, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie and Mumford and Sons. One Direction marks the first time, since SoundScan began keeping track in 1991, that an act has two albums that debuted in the same year taking two of the top five spots. Swift and Garth Brooks have come close to such an honor. 2012 also marks the first year that more than four country albums hold a place in the top ten, as 5 of the Top 10 albums of 2012 are country albums.

In 2012, overall album and physical CD sales decreased a little bit, while digital downloads expectantly increased. The top selling digital album of 2012? “21” by Adele, as well. Also of note, Billboard notes that for the fifth consecutive year, more vinyl albums were sold than in any other year since SoundScan launched in 1991. Finally, 2012 was a record year for digital downloads where a record 1.336 billion tracks were sold digitally, an increase of 5% from 2011. Check out the full list of the top album and song sales of 2012 below!

Walking Dead Shakeup! Show Renewed for 4th Season, EP Mazzara OUT

The_Walking_DeadChristmas is not being kind to a mastermind of the hit show, The Walking Dead. Early Friday morning, AMC announced that while they have opted (rightfully so) to renew the show for a fourth season, there is a major twist. Executive Producer Glen Mazzara is stepping down as showrunner.

According to AMC, this is a mutual decision based on creative differences. The network sees the show going in one direction that Mazzara does not agree with. In a statement AMC released this morning,

“Glen guided the series creatively for Seasons 2 and 3,” AMC said in a statement. “[We’re] grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on Season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.”

Mazzara calls his experience with TWD “amazing,” but notes that it’s time to move on. “I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, & The Killers Bolster THE VOICE Finale

UPDATE: NBC just announced the artists the Top 3 will perform special duets with Tuesday night during The Voice finale. Cassadee Pope will perform side by side with Avril Lavigne, while Team Blake teammate Terry McDermott sings alongside Peter Frampton. Nicholas David of Team Cee Lo will perform with Smokey Robinson.

We’re just under a week away from the third finale of NBC’s hit singing competition, The Voice, and NBC announced some of the headlining megastars that will be taking center stage for the finale. Bolstering the popular competitions finalists – Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott, and Nicholas David – the show is bringing about a diverse group of artists to keep you entertained throughout the night.

American Idol champ, Kelly Clarkson, will take the stage to perform her single “Catch My Breath” from her Greatest Hits Album, which is in stores now. Joining Clarkson will be R&B star Rihanna performing her hit single “Diamonds.” On the heels of his new album release, Bruno Mars will be on deck to perform his new single “When I Was Your Man” for the first time on television. Finally, rockers The Killers are set to appear and perform.

It’s likely the show’s coaches – Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Cee Lo Green – will in some way participate in the show’s festivities and NBC is promising a few more surprise performers along the way. The finale will surely have appearances and group performances featuring contestants who have been a part of the season, as well. The Voice airs it’s performance finale Monday at 8/7c, with a two-hour results finale on Tuesday night!

Who are you most excited to see? Which other artists would you like to see added to the lineup?
