Hurricane Sandy Affects Primetime TV Scheduling

Before we give you the lay down on how Sandy is impacting television this week, we want to be sure to send our thoughts and prayers to all of those who are in one way or another affected by Sandy this week. You’re in the Yak’s thoughts.

Now, those of you hoping to get CBS’s comedy block and Hawaii Five-0 last night found out the hard way. CBS pre-empted their original programming and aired a CBS News special on Sandy, since those on the east coast likely were not able to enjoy the same laughs you might have. The original episodes of How I Met Your Mother, Partners, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly and Hawaii Five-0 will air next Monday, November 5.

ABC and NBC have also made some moves. NBC’s special Halloween episodes of Go On and The New Normal, slated to air Tuesday at 10/9c after The Voice, have been pre-empted. ABC has also pre-empted Private Practice on October 30. Both NBC and ABC will air special coverage of Hurricane Sandy instead. Private Practice will return November 13th (next week is Election coverage) and there is no word when NBC will air their Halloween comedy specials.

The irony between much of the country being unable to see Revolution last night is not lost on NBC. The peacock has opted to pre-empt their Thursday comedies (30 Rock, Up All Night, The Office and Parks & Rec) to air a repeat of Team Adam and Team Cee Lo’s Knockout Round on The Voice, which aired Monday night. Monday night’s Revolution will air Friday November 2 at 8pm ET, followed by an all-new Grimm. NBC will, however, air an ORIGINAL 30 Rock Wednesday Oct 31, since the episode is a continuation from last week’s election themed plotline. This will give Tina Fey and Co. to finish off that story before next week’s actual Presidential election. This 30 Rock episode knocks off the final episode of already cancelled Animal Practice.

Phew. Got all that? That about covers it … check your DVRs.

Jennifer Esposito Leaves Blue Bloods, Calling CBS “Shameful”

Jennifer Esposito, who plays Detective Jackie Curatola on CBS’s hit show Blue Bloods, is leaving the series – at least temporarily. But why? According to a statement from CBS, Esposito has informed them that she is only available to work on a limited part-time schedule for the time being. “As a result, she’s unable to perform the demands of her role and we regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence,” the statement went on.

Now there is no definite word as to why Esposito has chosen to work for a limited time, but the actress has been public about her Celiac Disease. Her final episode will air Nov. 2 and her role as Danny Reagan’s partner (played by Donnie Wahlberg) will be filled with guest actresses throughout the season, starting with Megan Ketch who will be introduced in Esposito’s last episode.

The door is left open for Esposito to return, as CBS touts her talent in their released statement. After Deadline broke the news, Esposito took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the matter, calling CBS out on their shameful behavior in handling her struggles with Celiac. Esposito shared the following thoughts

“CBS PUT me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doctor said you needed a reduced schedule due to Celiac,” she wrote. “CBS didn’t listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was NOT truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise! It’s been almost two months without bringing me back to work + keeping Me from working anywhere else!… Absolutely shameful behavior.”

So who is to blame? Are you sad to see her go? Will she be back? Only time will tell. Blue Bloods airs Fridays at 10pm ET on CBS.

Report: Adele Welcomes Healthy Baby Boy

Adele Adkins

Adele has managed to do what so many big stars of her caliber can’t … stay out of the spotlight during a pregnancy. For the most part, Adele has managed to keep her private life private and that is respectable. After announcing her pregnancy via a post on her official website in June, the Grammy winner has been busy preparing for her first child. According to a report by UK’s The Sunday People, Adele gave birth to a healthy baby boy last week.

Four months after the big announcement, Adele and partner Simon Konecki are finally parents. The report states that a source close to the couple claims that “Adele and Simon are ecstatic at their new arrival.” Adele most recently released her theme for the new Bond “Skyfall,” which was well received by fans of her music and the movie alike. The singer’s rep would not confirm the news to the Toronto Star, stating that they would not release a statement at this time and that they had “no comment.”

Whether Adele has given birth or not, we at the Yak are happy for her and wish her and her new family the best in health and happiness.

The 3rd Annual American Country Awards: And the Nominees Are …

The American Country Awards are Fox’s latest attempt to get into the country mix. CBS has the ACMs, ABC has the CMAs and CMT is, well, a country music channel. Country music does generate viewership and Fox jumped into the mix a few years ago. However, the ACAs are more known for mixing in the usual suspects with the not so usual suspects to perform on stage. Another unique aspect of the ACAs is that it is the only fan voted country music award show out there. Luke Bryan leads with 7 nominations, while Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band have 6 apiece with Eric Church and Taylor Swift not far behind (with 5 each). Carrie Underwood is the show’s big winner, racking up 10 awards in the last 2 years. Check out the full list of nominees below. And don’t forget to vote for your favorites at TheACAs.com.

The ACAs, hosted once again by Kristin Chenoweth and Trace Adkins, will air LIVE from Vegas on December 10th at 8/7c on Fox!

American Music Awards: And the Nominees Are…

Oddly enough, Christina Aguilera (coach of NBC’s The Voice) joined producers of the American Music Awards (airing on ABC) to announce the nominations earlier today in Los Angeles. Aguilera is also the first performer announced for the 40th annual AMAs. Last years big winners, Taylor Swift and Adele, ended up with only one nomination each. Big time Idol success stories Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood nabbed two nominations each, while Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Usher, Chris Brown, One Direction and Maroon 5 snagged some nods their way. Minaj and Rihanna lead the nomination tally with 4 a piece. Newcomer Gotye got into the mix with a couple nominations. In addition to Artist of the Year, Justin Bieber snagged 2 more nominations in the Pop Album and Male Artist department.

The AMAs are determined through fan voting, which starts today. (Click here to cast your votes) Check out the full list of nominations below and let us know what you think!

The AMAs are set to air LIVE from Los Angeles on November 18th at 8/7c on ABC!

64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: And The Emmy Goes To …

Earlier tonight in Los Angeles, the 2012 Emmys were handed out in Primetime TV’s biggest night. Hosted by the ever entertaining Jimmy Kimmell, the awards proved to be quite an interesting evening. From hot and cold comedic moments (Tracy Morgan?) to panning of the same handful of faces in the audience (hello again, Clare Danes), there were a few surprises tonight (Damien Lewis), a couple snubs (Cat Deeley! Jim Parons! Bryan Cranston?) and a few of “oh ya, we predicted that” moments. Homeland won big in the Drama category, while Modern Family snagged quite a few comedic accolades early on. What did you think about tonight’s awards and the winners (or losers)? Sound off!

Creative Arts Emmys: And The 2012 Winners Are …

Last night, during an event in Los Angeles, the Creative Arts Emmys were handed out in a 5 hour ceremony. Most of the Emmy Awards are actually handed out during this ceremony with a select few saved for the Primetime telecast, which airs a week from tonight. Highlights from this ceremony can be seen Saturday Sept 22 at 8/7c on Reelz.

“2 Broke Girls,” “Justified,” “Smash,” and “The Walking Dead” were winners last night, as were a number of other reality and primetime hit series. “Game of Thrones,” “Great Expectations” and “Frozen Planet” were also big winners of the night, as well as CBS as a whole. HBO’s “Girls” snagged Best Comedy Casting while Showtime’s “Homeland” snagged the award in the drama category. “Deadliest Catch” took many of the creative Emmys for Reality TV. Smash’s win for Choreography shockingly ended the streak for “So You Think You Can Dance” wins in this category, but the Fox reality series didn’t come up empty handed as their acclaimed lighting department took away their prize. Check out the full list of winners below.

The Primetime Emmys, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs Sunday Sept 23 at 8/7c on ABC!

Big Brother 14: The Yak Chats with Shane Meaney

HOH & POV winner Danielle Murphree after Shane’s eviction

Last night on Big Brother 14, Dan Gheesling, Big Brother 10’s champ and this season’s only remaining vet, spread his mist over the house once again with another shocking blindside. Never did Danielle Murphree envision she’d be sending her in-house boyfriend, Shane Meaney, packing when she used the Power of Veto to save her ex-coach, Dan. Saving Dan gave him the sole evicting vote this week, which he cast to Shane, sending the house flipper to the jury house and sending Danielle and Ian to the Final 3 by his side. Check out what Shane had to say after this shocking blindside, including what he really thinks about Danielle and who he would have taken to the finals.

______________________________________

The Yak: When Danielle told you that she was going to use the veto to save Dan, did you fight for her not to do that or did you trust that Dan would keep you? If so, why would you trust Dan after what he was able to pull off following the “Funeral” of his? And looking back, was there something more you could have done to solidify that Danielle kept the nominations the same?
Shane Meaney: I didn’t want Danni to use the veto initially, but I did want to let her know if it was an option that we could all give each others word and move forward with our final three deal. I did trust Dan after what he pulled off at the funeral. He didn’t really do anything wrong at the funeral except save his butt. He didn’t lie.

Shane talks to host Julie Chen after his blindside

The Yak: We have heard you say on the feeds that you really aren’t that attracted to Danielle. Will you be trying to date her once you are out in the real world? Were you just using her attraction to you to get further in the game?
Shane: No – I was never using her to further advance me in the game. I had a true final two deal with her. I held up my end but I don’t know if she held up her end.

The Yak: If the roles were reversed and somehow Danielle was evicted tonight, who would you have taken to the end with you and why?
Shane: I would have taken Dan because I knew I could beat him in the Jury votes.

The Yak: We never really got to see you get into the strategy aspect of the game. Was winning competitions the corner stone of your strategy? If not, how would you best define your strategy?
Shane: Winning comps was definitely part of my strategy but also I wanted to lay low and stay under the radar to prevent a big target on my head.

The Yak: If Kara had stayed longer in the house, do you think things may have shaped up differently for you?
Shane: Yeah – I do. Kara and I hit it off just as well as Danielle and I did.

ABC sends “Once Upon A Time,” “Revenge,” and “Scandal” to Netflix

After the ratings surge “Breaking Bad” saw with it’s recent addition to Netflix, it was only a matter of time before some of the major broadcast networks experimented with this. Deadline is reporting that ABC will send three of it’s anticipated returning dramas to the online streaming site by the end of the month. It’s not so common to see such new dramas head to Netflix, but what does ABC have to lose with these three promising dramas? The seasons will be available to US subscribers just days before the shows are set to premiere.

September’s Premiere and Finale Calendar

“Once Upon a Time” and “Revenge” kick off their seasons on Sept. 30, while “Scandal” will kick off just a few days earlier on Sept. 27, following the premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy.” This isn’t typical of broadcast networks who like to keep their content exclusive, but this might just jump start other networks to make similar moves. We’ve already seen NBC and Fox preview a few of their fall fare online and On Demand for some select cable providers. This might push the other networks to follow similar suit in the future … maybe even sooner than we think. As you consider catching up on these shows before they kick off their second season, don’t forget to check out our own “Once Upon a Time” recaps from season 1 to get you ready for season 2.
