According to director James Cameron at the Producer’s Guild Awards this past weekend, work to complete the Avatar trilogy is underway! The two sequels now have anticipated release dates, although they should be taken with a grain of salt since the Avatar December 2009 release had multiple planned release dates before. Cameron is on record stating, “I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan. It seems to be popular choice now-a-days to film big hits as part of one massive project, only to be released separately to build on momentum. Harry Potter and Twilight are two very recent examples of this tactic.
As to who will return in the much-anticipated sequels, Cameron notes, “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.” The director doesn’t stop there. He and Fox also plan to donate an amount of the sequels’ earnings to charity. “Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.” Looking forward to the sequels? How would you like to see the trilogy play out? Let us know below and in our FORUMS!
