‘Boardwalk Empire’ premiered with amazing reviews and debut ratings ranking the best in HBO history, prompting the pay network to renew the show for a second season.
Pickup of the most expensive series HBO has ever produced was not unexpected however even before the huge ratings premier last Sunday night. On it’s debut night, HBO aired the series three times, garnering a combination of 7.1 million viewers, and even that number should increase greatly once everyone who DVR’d the premier sit down to watch. Even more impressive was that the ‘Boardwalk’ premier was up against NFL football (NY Giants v. Indianapolis Colts), and still reached a huge amount of viewers, 55% male according to HBO’s demographics.
‘Boardwalk Empire’ is Directed by Martin Scorsese, joined by creator Terence Winter, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg as Executive Producers. The show stars Steve Buscemi as the corrupt treasurer of Atlantic CIty, and co-stars Kelly Macdonald, Michael Pitt and Michael Shannon. The drama is set during the Prohibition Era, and is filmed stunningly.
