Dancing With The Stars – Week 7 – Team Solo Stirs Pack

Alright folks, here we go! Another week of dancing, but this week it was times two! Tonight each couple had two dances; the first was a team dance, aka the Team Cha Cha Cha dance off and the second was a solo dance they hadn’t yet learned. It definitely stirred the pack as well but what befuddles this writer is that Brooke Burke has taken the biggest tumble since she hasn’t worn a bizarre dress in many weeks. What gives?!? A guest judge was there tonight too, Donny Burns who apparently is the Barishnykov of the ballroom, which will explain the  higher totals throughout this recap.

So, first up was Team Cha Cha Cha #1. Hines and Chelsea got to pick their teams, and Chelsea’s team of her and Mark, Romeo and Chelsie, and Ralph and Karina went first. They danced wearing a leather and lace ensemble and had a fun time with it. It was lively and spirited, with each team adding their own bit of flair to it. I was very impressed with Ralph in this dance, he did seriously well keeping up with the two younger star dancers. The judges were mixed in their review and ended up giving them a total of 30 out of 40.

Next up was the team chosen by Hines of him and Kym, Kirstie and Maks, and Kendra and Louis. Kendra continued her streak of keeping it TOO real by farting during group rehearsal. This girl has zero shame and maybe that’s a good thing, being herself and not putting on pretenses but I’m not so sure. We’ve now seen her sniff her armpits, explain her menstrual cycle and fart. What got me is that she danced really well but it’s overshadowed by her bad attitude and constant bodily functions. Sometimes voters just can’t get past that and I’ll admit, I’m one of them. The judges were also mixed on this team and gave them the same score as the first team, 30 out of 40. It was an even playing field at this point.

Two ballroom legends were brought in to coach the dance teams in their solo dances tonight too, one of them being Mark Ballas’s mother.

Mark and Chelsea danced the first solo dance of the night, the Paso Doble. Chelsea is a bright, bubbly, cheerful girl who doesn’t want to cause trouble or insult anyone. That’s what is endearing about her, she seems like someone you could hang out with at the mall and have a great time with. The Paso Doble is about intensity and aggression, her partner Mark Ballas wanted to bring that out of her while keeping her bubbly side to a minimum. His momma repeatedly told her she couldn’t smile and you could tell this poor girl was trying so hard during rehearsals not to. During the performance, you could tell she was really trying to keep up the intensity but the thing for me is that if you have to try that hard it’s going to show. That being said, her dancing was incredible too. The judges were mixed on this; Carrie Ann and Bruno loved it while Len and Donny said that it was a confusing intensity. They scored 34 out of 40, for an overall total of 64 out of 80.

Kendra and Louis danced the tango after that and she seemingly had a breakthrough during her rehearsals because you could see her attitude, bad one, sifting away. That being said, for me, it was too little too late. I know more about this woman’s bodily functions than I know about my own and while I may not be in as good shape as these people are, I know enough to not discuss my menstrual cycle to a large audience, sniff my armpits in public or fart in front of a large group of people. It really sucks too because she showed tonight she can dance really well if she wants to. My fear is that her earlier and continued antics will overshadow it. The judges thought she did really well, but noted she seemed to cling to Louis throughout while commending her keeping up with his incredibly difficult choreography. She scored 31 out of 40, for a total of 61 out of 80.

Kirstie and Maks danced the Jive next and here’s the difference between her and Kendra. Kendra danced better than Kirstie did on a technical aspect tonight BUT Kirstie puts so much flair, so much personality, so much vibrance into her dance that you get caught up in it. At one point she grabbed Maks for another kiss, and she put her own flair into it. The judges noted that technically she wasn’t the greatest, but all of them except Len commended her showmanship and entertainment factor….the scores reflected this too though, she ended up with a 30 out of 40 for an overall total of 60 out of 80.

Ralph and Karina did the Quickstep to a Prohibition era theme. I loved this dance, I was so happy and impressed with Ralph being able to keep up on this fast paced danced. He just blew me away, even with his injuries (remember the man is nearly 50), he did SO well tonight. The judges loved it, with the  only critique being that he needs to tighten up his upper body. But one judge loved him so much they gave him his first 10! He got a total of 36 out of 40, for an overall total of 66 out of 80.

Hines and Kym danced the Tango tonight and I really liked it. I thought it was right on technically, and I could feel the emotion and showmanship oozing out of him. But I was shocked at the judges’ review; Len said it was mixed with a bit of tiger and then a bit of dainty which he didn’t like. Bruno loved it, as did Carrie Ann for the most part but she also felt like he was a bit off tonight in his balance. Donny said that he was great, except that his arms were wafting a bit when they should be tight. He still ended up getting a 36 out of 40, for an overall total of 66 out of 80.

Finally, Romeo and Chelsie danced the Samba tonight. During the first part of this season I wasn’t a Romeo fan. I thought he was too focused on looking cool  and not looking like a wuss, he didn’t seem to get into it and had an ego that drove me nuts. But as the weeks have gone by he’s grown on me a bit, even with that carry off the floor the judges ignored last week. Tonight I saw a few flubs, there were times he’d go to take her hand and miss. The judges though came down hard on him in some parts. They said he had bounce, but it was the wrong type of bounce. Len even went so far to say that the prop flames were  the only hot thing on the dance floor, that he talked the talk but didn’t walk the walk. He got a 30 out of 40 for an overall total of 60 out of 80.

So here’s your leaderboard for the night, but first, my bottom three: Kendra/Louis, Romeo/Chelsie and I don’t know the third. I don’t have a third. I hope Kendra goes, her time is up.
