Best Actress #3 is Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone. Admittedly, I had no idea who she was before this, but that’s what we personally love about the awards lately; it’s giving those lesser known actors/actresses a push into the spotlight they deserve. The movie itself tells the tale of a poor Missouri family struggling to get by. Lawrence, only 19 herself, plays a 17 year old girl that is quite clearly the glue that holds this family together after the disappearance of her father. She’s an Ozark girl, treading through dangerous social terrain on this quest, hunting after said father (who is also a drug dealer) while also trying to keep her family intact. It’s a raw performance full of intense emotion that leaves you both hanging on the edge of your seat and biting your nails.
