Oscar Week: Meet The Nominees, Part III

Today’s Best Supporting Actress nominee is Melissa Leo in The Fighter. She plays Alice Ward, mother to two boxing sons, Dickie Ecklund and Mickey Ward. Her character is polarizing, with some seeing her as an overeager mother desperate for fame and money for her sons while favoring the older Dickie. Others see her as holding the family together while getting careers for her two sons. She is aggressive, codependent and larger than life but interestingly enough, Leo reports that this family is still intact and in contact, so she couldn’t have done that bad, right? Leo is incredible in this role, so galvanizing and it plays nicely as a follow up to her also Oscar nominated role in Frozen River.
