As we continue our showcase, the first Best Picture nominee we will feature is Black Swan. It tells the story of Nina, played by Natalie Portman, whose life is consumed with being a ballerina. She lives with her retired ballerina mother, Erica, who gives the term “stage mother” a whole new definition. Due to her age, prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) is being hung out to dry by artistic director Thomas LeRoy . The first production of the upcoming ballet season will be ‘Swan Lake’ and LeRoy’s first choice for Beth’s replacement is Nina. However, Lily (Mila Kunis), an up and coming ballerina who impresses LeRoy as well, poses a threat to Nina’s stardom. ‘Swan Lake’ requires a star who can be both innocent and graceful as the White Swan, but also sensual with guile as the Black Swan. These two young dancers expand their rivalry into a macabre friendship; and Nina finds herself more and more in touch with her dark side as recklessness emerges.
