Jennifer Hudson, the winner of an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy, will be joining the cast of NBC’s SMASH in the upcoming second season (set to air in January 2013). Her arc will begin with the season premiere when the musical drama returns. According to NBC, Hudson will portray Veronica Moore, a Tony Award-winning Broadway star who impacts the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty). Of course, this addition will pair two Idol alums on the small screen on NBC’s musical drama.
“We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Hudson coming to ‘Smash,’” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment. “This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”
Executive Producer Steven Spielberg has high hopes for the Dreamgirls star. “I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC,” he commented.
Hudson’s accolades are not some to be dismissed. She won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role as Effie in Dreamgirls and also earned a Grammy for her self-titled debut album.
It was also announced earlier today that Hudson will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.
This addition to the cast is sure to excite many SMASH fans. What do you think of the news? Sound off below!
