Pilot News: NBC Planning the Next ‘Glee’? Plus, Wonder Woman on TV

As we near pilot development season, more and more news seems to be coming out from the networks regarding what they have up their sleeve for the upcoming TV season. There just might be something from NBC to either make you groan or squee with joy. Yes, I said squee. No doubt following the craze of Glee, NBC is hopping on board the musical theme and developing what I’m sure they’re hoping is their next big thing (which NBC so desperately needs). The Peacock has ordered an hour long drama centered around a diverse cast of characters who come together to stage a Broadway show. The show, titled Smash, has a pretty impressive back up of names behind it. Producers include Steven Spielberg, Craig Zedon and Neil Meron (Chicago), and Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman (Hairspray songwriters). It appears that Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) is in talks to direct. And this is where fans rejoice. Mayer directing could almost be a shoo-in for Awakening star, Jonthan Groff (Lea Michele’s former Awakening leading man and ex-Glee co-star), to grab the lead role!

In other pilot news, NBC has greenlit a Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelly, who recently had strong numbers for his premiere of Harry’s Law, also on NBC. Earlier this year, all major networks passed on this drama due to its high price tag and being introduced late in the game. However, with the deal with NBC and Comcast now done, it appears to have made way for this to happen. The pilot has Warner Bros and DC very excited. Kelly’s take will have Wonder Woman (Diana Prince) as an LA based corporate exec juggling her job as a vigilante crime fighter on the side. Who would you like to see nab the lead role?

What are your takes on Smash and Wonder Woman? Is NBC right to jump on the Glee wagon or could this be just another copy cat? Would you watch either of these pilots?
