But isn’t that called “The Sing Off?” Yes and no. 19 Entertainment, the minds behind American Idol, have joined forces with Variety Vocals to bring the fever from “Pitch Perfect” to a small screen near you, as TVLine reports. The show would chronicle the nation’s a cappella tournament, NCAA style.
The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) would be followed throughout the tournament series, ranging from local to regional to national/international rounds. Amanda Newman, director of the ICCA, said in a statement Saturday night,
“The idea is to show what you saw in Pitch Perfect and was based on a true story about our tournament. It’d show the groups going through all the rounds of the tournament leading up to the finals, and also show a bit of the students’ backgrounds.”
However, back to our original question. This will not be like NBC’s “The Sing Off,” which will air the competition’s 4th season this upcoming December. The series in development will not act as a competition based series involving a celebrity panel and America’s votes from a soundstage. No word on when this will air, what network or how it will exactly chronicle the journey, but look for capitalization on the success of “Pitch Perfect,” just as NBC has brought “The Sing Off” back from the dead.
