Survivor One World: Hear From Kourtney Moon

Kourtney Moon the 29-year-old motorcycle mechanic from Austin Texas was the first person to leave Survivor One World due to injury.  As luck would have it Kourtney broke her wrist and arm in multiple places during the first challenge of the season.

Asked about her injury Kourtney replied, “The whole experience was pretty awkward.  I knew it was broken from the very moment that I rolled off that net and tried to pull my hands back, it wasn’t going anywhere.”

The Yak: Kourtney as a motorcycle mechanic how has this affected your livelihood?

Kourtney:: It already really has. I came back and tried to work and the pain was really excruciating. I couldn’t even degrease an engine.  I knew I had to do physical therapy but there was some paperwork we were waiting for.  During the time I was gone my boss had hired a new apprentice to take my place and then she was robbed on top of it! I told her I’m going to be out of commission anyway, you guys are doing well she has my hours anyway, so it was kind of a mutual thing.  It helped me see that I want to keep working on motorcycles as like a hobby something that I enjoy to do.  Sometimes when you’re working in a motorcycle garage you’re working on everybody else’s bike instead of your own and…it’s kind of sad.

The Yak: Was this your first attempt to become a Survivor contestant?

Kourtney::  It was my very first.  To be honest I’ve never watched Survivor. I guess you could say that I was recruited.  I eventually did have to fill out an application and submit a video but they found me.

The Yak: As far as camp life goes, what was the hardest thing out there in those three days?

Kourtney::  Um..dealing with the women.  Camp life was awesome!  I can’t say enough about camp life.  That was my favorite part of it.

The Yak: What did you think about Alicia?

Kourtney:: She…..oh gosh.. She really rubbed me the wrong way when I was out there.  I can’t lie, she really did.

The Yak: During your time at camp did you notice a clear leader of your tribe?

Kourtney::  Yes and no.  I had my assumptions but it wasn’t really clear yet. I kind of thought that both Sabrina and Kim had the potential to be puppet masters, but I wasn’t quite sure about that yet.

The Yak: After seeing the girls throw each other under the bus at Tribal Council were you glad you didn’t have to go through that?

Kourtney::  No I was actually really kind of looking forward to TC.  I was looking forward to vent and to tell some of the girls how I really felt about them.

The Yak: Were you able to make any alliances?

Kourtney::  Yeah, I was in the underdog alliance at the moment.  I had a pretty solid bond with Monica and I was confident with Christina and Nina, but that was it.

The Yak: Would you do it again?

Kourtney::  I think I would.  I would be more reluctant if it was a girl vs. boy scenario.  I am curious if I was in a more traditional Survivor setting, I can’t say that I wouldn’t do it.

The Yak: I understand that you have a bigger medical issue than your wrist?

Kourtney:: Yeah, I had to get emergency surgery because they found a tumor in my abdomen and they had to remove it.  It was a pretty traumatic experience; my Dad’s in Afghanistan right now and my Mom doesn’t live in Austin so I was in the hospital the first couple of nights, pretty much alone getting all this information.  I’m definitely afraid of having my blood drawn so that was a huge ordeal in itself.  I went through all these tests and I had these sneaking suspicions that something wasn’t right.  Sure enough in the cat scan and sonogram they found a grapefruit sized tumor in my ovary.  My worst-case scenario was that it was completely devouring my reproductive system and I would like to have a baby again. (Kourtney currently has a son). It was not benign and I am waiting back on some test results.  My doctor is confident however that it’s not going to be a big problem.

We certainly wish Kourtney the best and thank her for talking with us at Yakkity Yaks!!

Wow talk about a mixed blessing…..actually that Survivor may have helped save her life by her needing medical care for a broken wrist. Hope all turns out well for you.
