NBC gave viewers a sneak peek of another sitcom they have slated for the fall. Tonight, after America’s Got Talent, NBC previewed Guys With Kids, a new comedy from Jimmy Fallon about three 30-something dads who try to remain young as they face the responsibilities of having kids. Gary (Anthony Anderson), Chris (Jesse Bradford) and Nick (Zach Cregger) have each other as they try to remain “dudes” while staying “dads.” Chris, recently divorced, is struggling to find his swagger back, but Gary and Nick are confident they can help … as can his adorable little son Ernie, who helps him meet a woman in a sports bar one afternoon. As Chris struggles to find a babysitter, against his ex-wife’s wishes, to go on this date, Nick offers to watch Ernie. Of course, things don’t go as hoped, as Chris’s controlling ex, Sheila, catches wind of the operation.
Meanwhile, Nick’s wife, Emily (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) is desperately searching for a night out, away from her duties as a stay-at-home mom, while Marny (Tempestt Bledsoe), Gary’s wife, struggles to acknowledge Gary’s sacrifices as a stay at home dad with four kids.
The pilot has it’s moments, like many do, but it seems to have undershot in a few places. While it is taped in front of a studio audience, the laughs seem forced. The moments the show did have do not seem strong in a world with reputable, stable sitcoms that have raised expectations. We’ll see the longevity the show has, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s one of the first new shows we lose this season. We want to know what you think! We, at the Yak, give it
