Weird Holiday of the Day – Umbrella Day

TODAY’S “HOLIDAY” – FEBRUARY 10TH
Umbrella Day

Umbrellas are a remarkably effective accessory for protecting yourself from wind, rain and sun. Whatever the weather, Umbrella Day is a great excuse to sport a fetching brolly when you’re out and about!

Umbrellas are quite popular in our society! You have Mary Poppins, who uses it as her main form of transportation. There’s Rihanna, who made a hit song about it. In numerous cartoons, it’s used to stop people from dying during a fall from tall heights. How will you celebrate Umbrella Day? Comment below to let us know!

“You said when the storm came that you would be there with your umbrella to block the rain.” ~ Jennifer Hudson

Melanie Martinez (The Voice) Releases New Video

Uploaded just over an hour ago, Melanie Martinez has debuted her official new video for her track ‘Dollhouse’. It’s… Interesting. A bit dark and creepy for sure.

You all remember Melanie. She was the girl on Adam’s team with the two toned hair, half blond/half black on The Voice Season 3. There was uproar one week when Christina decided that Melanie was not paying enough attention to her critique and showed her disapproval. Melanie fans took to Twitter angry with Christina for being so rude. This was the same year that Cassadee Pope won for Blake’s team.

Give her new video a look and and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Coca-Cola for your Office

The Breakmate was supposed to revolutionize how we consumed soda, on par with the advent of the soda fountain and soda bottles, and bring delicious sugary soft drinks to millions of disenfranchised American office workers. So why did Coca-Cola’s foray into small-scale commercial vending during the 1980’s flop so miserably?

It’s not particularly hard to sell Coca-Cola in America, or anywhere for that matter; the global brand is valued just north of $167 billion. It’s the number one soft drink in the US and has been for more than a century. But in the mid 1970’s Coke began looking into a new potential market, one under-served by traditional, full-sized vending machines: small offices and commercial spaces with 5 – 50 employees.

Coke’s solution? The Breakmate, a refrigerated, table-top mini-dispenser about the size of a ’80s microwave that mixed three Coca Cola syrup varieties (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite) in the traditional soda fountain ratio of 5:1 syrup to soda water. Coke teamed with Bosch-Siemens to develop the device, which was essentially an early version of the self-service soda fountains you find at fast food joints today. It was meant to sit right next to the coffee machine and become a fixture in offices across the country.

“Coffee is a morning beverage, but soft drinks are an all-day option,” said Ira L. Gleser, a Coca-Cola spokesman, told the LA Times in 1988. “And soft drinks are now the beverage of choice in America with people consuming about 45 gallons per capita annually. That’s more than even tap water.” And modestly terrifying from a public health standpoint, no wonder we’re such a bunch of fatties these days.

The Breakmate did receive a modest amount of attention when it debuted, being installed in roughly 20,000 locations in its first year. Coca Cola anticipated the system earning as much as two percent of the company’s sales—roughly 20 million gallons of concentrate—annually.

This did not happen. The Breakmate turned out to be an especially finicky device. The pour quality was wildly inconsistent, cross-contamination of soda flavors was an occurrence, and the devices themselves demanded near-constant upkeep to operate properly. And while the system was designed to deliver a 6.5 ounce beverage at an average cost of 25.6 cents, the service calls quickly turned the Breakmate from a money-maker to a money pit.

As such, Coke pulled the plug on the Breakmate in 2007 when it stopped furnishing replacement parts, and buried the failed system in 2010, when it halted sales of the device’s 1-liter syrup tanks. For now, we’ll have to get our soda the same way we have since 1899: In a bottle.

Weird Holiday of the Day – Read in the Bathtub Day

TODAY’S “HOLIDAY” – FEBRUARY 9TH
Read in the Bathtub Day

A day for relaxing in style, Read In The Bathtub Day gives you the opportunity to have a guilt-free early, relaxing night with no pressures.

Disconnect the phone, lock the door, turn down the lights and pick out your favourite book safe in the knowledge that all you’ve got to worry about is enjoying yourself. Why not splash out on some scented candles, posh bubblebath and – for the more adventurous – a rubber ducky to keep you company?

I have a bathtub, but I can’t recall the last time I read in there. Also, I feel like there’s a bit more danger and permanence in dropping a Kindle in the tub, rather than a standard paperback. The paperback can dry out, and while it may end up warped from the water damage, it can still be used. I can’t say the same for the Kindle if it decides to join you for a swim!

“I knew we were having problems when you put those piranhas in my bathtub again.” ~ Weird Al Yankovic

Fox Cancels “The X Factor”

Even “The X Factor” doesn’t have the X factor. Or maybe now it is the ex-factor. (See what I did there?) Late Friday evening, Fox announced that the struggling reality competition series will not return for a fourth season.

“American Idol” remains Fox’s sole singing competition. With the news, Simon Cowell, the ex-Idol judge who brought the UK series to America, released a statement.

“I’ve had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on The X Factor and American Idol. And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!). Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of ‘The X Factor’ in 2014. So for now, I’m back to the U.K. and I want to thank FOX for being an incredible partner and I also want to thank everybody who has supported my shows. America, I’ll see you soon!”

Is it just me or is Cowell trying to make it sound as if it’s because he chose to return to the UK and not because Fox chose to cancel the show? The statement from Kevin Reilly, Fox pres, seems to sing a tune along those lines. “To all of us at FOX, Simon is more than one of the most prolific TV personalities of our time –he’s part of our family. A consummate showman and partner, there’s no one more passionate or creative than Simon, and we feel so fortunate to have enjoyed such a wonderful, collaborative relationship with him over the past 12 years. Unfortunately, there is no X FACTOR USA without Simon Cowell, but we understand and support his decision to focus on the international formats and on the next phase of his personal life. We wish him the very best, and it’s our sincere hope that we work together again soon.”

The Return of Jimmy Kimmel Sucks!

The cast of “Monuments Men” is coming to chat with Jimmy Kimmel tonight, including his arch nemesis Matt Damon. It’s sure to be a good time!

If you remember, back in January, 2013, Damon took over Kimmel’s ABC late-night show, temporarily renamed Jimmy Kimmel Sucks!, which was chock full of big stars including Andy Garcia, Sheryl Crow, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore. For the whole hour, Kimmel was gagged and tied to a chair.

Damon, making his return tonight with his Monuments Men cast, causes even more tension with the late night host. (Watch the brief preview below.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter: “If that wasn’t enough, Kimmel will do another installment of “Mean Tweets,” this time with a tweet from his own Twitter handle, @jimmykimmel. In the clip, Kimmel bashes Damon, though the Oscar winner has the last laugh (yoga pants!).”

Scheduled to appear tonight with Damon are George Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban and Cate Blanchett. This episode of Jimmy Kimmel is airing at the same time as Jay Leno’s last show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb5tdqplTqQ

According to Fox:

More than three decades after the debut of “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage,” Carl Sagan’s stunning and iconic exploration of the universe as revealed by science, COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY sets off on a new voyage for the stars. Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD) and Sagan’s original creative collaborators – writer/executive producer Ann Druyan and astronomer Steven Soter – have teamed to conceive a 13-part docu-series that will serve as a successor to the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series.

Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the series will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It will bring to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transport viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale. COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY will invent new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invent celebrated elements of the legendary original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination. The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

Carl Sagan’s original series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” was first broadcast in 1980, and has been enjoyed by more than 750 million people worldwide.
