BREAKING: Sopranos Star James Gandolfini Dies at 51

JamesGandolfiniHBO has confirmed that “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini has died at the age of 51.

Gandolfini reportedly suffered a heart attack in Italy. This is a developing story. Check back for more information.

HBO released a statement regarding the news.

“We’re all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. He was special man, a great talent…a gentle & loving person who treated everyone no matter their title/position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. He will be deeply missed by all of us.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Gandolfini, whose portrayal of a brutal, emotionally delicate mob boss in HBO’s “The Sopranos” helped create one of TV’s greatest drama series and turned the mobster stereotype on its head, died Wednesday in Italy. He was 51.

Gandolfini died while on holiday in Rome, the cable channel and Gandolfini’s managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. No cause of death was given.

“He was a genius,” said “Sopranos” creator David Chase. “Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes.”

Gandolfini, who won three Emmy Awards for his role as Tony Soprano, worked steadily in film and on stage after the series ended. He earned a 2009 Tony Award nomination for his role in the celebrated production of “God of Carnage.”

“Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving,” said managers Armstrong and Sanders.

HBO called the actor a “special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone, no matter their title or position, with equal respect.” The channel expressed sympathy for his wife and children.

Joe Gannascoli, who played Vito Spatafore on the HBO drama, said he was shocked and heartbroken.

“Fifty-one and leaves a kid — he was newly married. His son is fatherless now … It’s way too young,” Gannascoli said.

Gandolfini’s performance in “The Sopranos” was indelible and career-making, but he refused to be stereotyped as the bulky mobster who was a therapy patient, family man and apparently effortless killer.

In a December 2012 interview with The Associated Press, a rare sit-down for the star who avoided the spotlight, he was upbeat about a slew of smaller roles following the breathtaking blackout ending in 2007 of “The Sopranos.”

“I’m much more comfortable doing smaller things,” Gandolfini said in the interview. “I like them. I like the way they’re shot; they’re shot quickly. It’s all about the scripts — that’s what it is — and I’m getting some interesting little scripts.”

He played Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta in Kathryn Bigelow’s Osama bin Laden hunt docudrama “Zero Dark Thirty.” He worked with Chase for the ’60s period drama “Not Fade Away,” in which he played the old-school father of a wannabe rocker. And in Andrew Dominick’s crime flick “Killing Them Softly,” he played an aged, washed-up hit man.

There were comedies such as the political satire “In the Loop,” and the heartwarming drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” which co-starred Kristen Stewart. He voiced the Wild Thing Carol in “Where the Wild Things Are.”

Gandolfini grew up in Park Ridge, N.J., the son of a building maintenance chief at a Catholic school and a high school lunch lady.

While Tony Soprano was a larger-than-life figure, Gandolfini was exceptionally modest and obsessive — he described himself as “a 260-pound Woody Allen.”

In past interviews, his cast mates had far more glowing descriptions to offer.

“I had the greatest sparring partner in the world, I had Muhammad Ali,” said Lorraine Bracco, who, as Tony’s psychiatrist Dr. Melfi, went one-on-one with Gandolfini in their penetrating therapy scenes. “He cares what he does, and does it extremely well.”

After earning a degree in communications from Rutgers University, Gandolfini moved to New York, where he worked as a bartender, bouncer and nightclub manager. When he was 25, he joined a friend of a friend in an acting class, which he continued for several years.

Gandolfini’s first big break was a Broadway production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” where he played Steve, one of Stanley Kowalski’s poker buddies. His film debut was in Sidney Lumet’s “A Stranger Among Us” (1992).

Director Tony Scott, who killed himself in August 2012, had praised Gandolfini’s talent for fusing violence with charisma — which he would perfect in Tony Soprano.

Gandolfini played a tough guy in Tony Scott’s 1993 film, “True Romance,” who beat Patricia Arquette’s character to a pulp while offering such jarring, flirtatious banter as, “You gotta lot of heart kid.”

Scott called Gandolfini “a unique combination of charming and dangerous.”

Gandolfini continued with supporting roles in “Crimson Tide” (1995), “Get Shorty” (1995), “The Juror” (1996), Lumet’s “Night Falls on Manhattan” (1997), “She’s So Lovely” (1997), “Fallen” (1998) and “A Civil Action” (1998). But it was “True Romance” that piqued the interest of Chase.

He shared a Broadway stage with Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in “God of Carnage” when he received the best-actor Tony nod. He was in “On the Waterfront” with David Morse and was an understudy in a revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1992 starring Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange.

In his 2012 AP interview, Gandolfini said he gravitated to acting as a release, a way to get rid of anger. “I don’t know what exactly I was angry about,” he said.

“I try to avoid certain things and certain kinds of violence at this point,” he said last year. “I’m getting older, too. I don’t want to be beating people up as much. I don’t want to be beating women up and those kinds of things that much anymore.”

Stealthy TODAY Replacement |

As has been the buzz, Ann Curry is OUT of NBC’s The Today Show. And as has been the speculation, her replacement? Savannah Guthrie. With no mention of a new cohost combo, viewers of the Today Show noticed the stealthy cohost replacement early Friday morning. The program opened with Guthrie and Lauer behind the news desk with no mention of missing cohosts (Curry). Looks like NBC is keeping things classy with this change over. On Friday afternoon, NBC ended the speculation with this comment in a press release.

“As soon as Savannah joined NBC News she was a standout, reporting for every franchise in the news division and rising through the ranks. She has a one-of-a-kind combination of sharp wit and approachability, and our viewers value her journalistic skills and legal background just as much as her humor and charm. She can effortlessly go from interviewing the Secretary of State to jumping Olympic-sized hurdles on the Plaza. I’m thrilled to welcome Savannah as our newest co-anchor, and along with Matt, Al and Natalie, we’ve got the best morning team in the business.”

Fashion Star Host OUT |

Elle Macpherson, host of NBC’s reality show Fashion Star, has stepped down from her duties for the show’s upcoming second season. With this news, the show will also be parting ways with one of it’s retail partners, H&M. In an interview with the New York Post, Macpherson notes “I have been involved with Fashion Star from the beginning and am very proud to see it come to life, not only in America but globally. The show is in great hands, and although I will not be hosting this season, I will still be very involved [as an executive producer and] will be reviewing the format for the upcoming season.” The show, expected to debut in early 2013, is not expected to part ways with judges Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos and Nicole Richie.

The series will be taking a break for the 4th, but will be back with the first LIVE show on July 11 at 8/7c!

It’s All Smiles at THE VOICE |

When The Voice closed season 2, things were not all bubbly behind the scenes. Tensions were reportedly in the air between mentors Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera. Levine recently told MTV that things are now much better between the pop rocker and the songstress. “We bickered a little bit in the beginning, to be totally truthful, we had a little bit of a rough start, just kind of all getting to know each other,” Levine mentioned of his bond with Aguilera. Things seemed to really heat up with Levine’s finalist (and ex-Mouseketeer) Tony Lucca singing “99 Problems,” which Aguilera found “derogatory.” Levine has cleared the air saying that he loves her, “she’s the best, and we’re having a fantastic time as of late on the set.” The Voice is currently filming the blind auditions for season 3, set to premiere Sept 10 on NBC!

BREAKING: Lohan Found Unconscious, Transported to Hospital

UPDATE: Lohan’s rep blames this on “dehydration and exhaustion,” as Lindsay was up all night filming for her movie. Her rep denied the use of any drugs or alcohol playing a role here. Lohan was reported up all night filming, went back to her hotel room at 8am to sleep. When production tried to wake her up, they were unsuccessful and called 911. Lohan is reportedly returning home and will be back on set later today.

This is a developing story, but ABC 7 KTLA in Los Angeles has reported that trouble actress Lindsay Lohan has been found unconscious at Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey. She has since been transported to a local hospital by paramedics. Paramedics were called at 10:15 a.m. PST. Details of the story will likely be flooding in and we’ll do our best to keep you updated. So stick to this page and we’ll post updates as they roll in. So far, a “friend” has said that she is doing fine and will hopefully be released soon.

Lohan is currently filming Lifetime’s Elizabeth Taylor bio-pic “Liz & Dick.” It’s no secret the troubled past this actress has had with drugs and alcohol. She has been in and out of rehab multiple times and was recently taken off of probation from a DUI case in 2007.

Report: Ryan Seacrest Eyes Dick Clark Productions

It was only a matter of time. Reuters is reporting that the American Idol host plans on making a bid to buy Dick Clark Productions. The production company named about Seacrest’s mentor was recently retained by Raine Group. A number of bidders, including Ryan Seacrest Media, is rumored to be placing bids to purchase the company.

In addition to American Idol, Seacrest had dabbled his hosting abilities in a number of different forums, including a radio countdown, a morning show on a local LA radio station, E! News and red carpet specials, as well as New Year’s Eve Specials with Clark. Dick Clark, American Bandstand, Dies at 82.

He will most certainly be missed.

Widely Popular Actor, George Clooney, Arrested

Actor George Clooney arrested outside the Embassy of Sudan.
As initially broken via Ann Curry’s Twitter, it has been confirmed that actor George Clooney has indeed been arrested early Friday morning in Washington DC. Curry tweeted: “Under arrest: George Clooney and his father Nick for protesting Sudan’s attacks on its Nuba people. Arrested at Sudan’s embassy in DC.” It is no secret that the politically vocal Hollywood leading man has been leading a campaign against the Sudanese government and to bring peace to the people of Sudan.

A representative for the Oscar winning actor released the following statement: “They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.”

Mel Gibson Returns, the New Comeback Kid?

Mel Gibson, Jaime Fox and Garry Shandling got together for a little brainstorming recently on how best to pay tribute to Robert Downey Jr. for his upcoming award at American Cinematique and below is how it went. Quite frankly, as much trouble Mel Gibson has found himself in lately, I loved this, and love a come back story. Heck, Robert Downey Jr. is a come back story all his own, so it all seems very appropriate. Hopefully, for me, Mr. Gibson has just found himself on the path up. Plus, you can’t go wrong with Jaime and Garry at your side! So, take a look below and tell us what you think!

‘Rehab’ Star Amy Winehouse Dies at 27

Amy Winehouse, 27 year old Back to Black singer, has been found dead in her UK flat Saturday evening. The cause of death was not immediately clear, however, reports are swirling that Winehouse died of a drug overdose.

Winehouse was seen earlier this week at the iTunes festival with Dionne Bromfield. While she didn’t perform, Amy took the mic to ask the crowd to buy Bromfield’s album.

Amy Winehouse is no stranger to drug related incidents. She entered treatment in late 2007 for drug treatment, including heroine use. She most recently cancelled all upcoming performances. Her spokesperson released a message stating, “Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen.”

Winehouse was considered by many to be a talented artist, however, her history with substance abuse seemed to leave a question mark with many of her critics. Our thoughts are with her friends and family.
