Wes Craven, Horror Maestro, Dies at 76

Wes Craven, the famed writer-director of horror films known for the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movies, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.

Craven, whose iconic Freddy Krueger character horrified viewers for years, died at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced. Survivors include his wife, producer and former Disney Studios vice president Iya Labunka.
Craven was a longtime summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, where he moved permanently three years ago before returning to Los Angeles for work and health reasons.
Craven claimed to have gotten the idea for Elm Street when living next to a cemetery on a street of that name when growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. The five Nightmare on Elm Street films were released from 1984-89.
Similarly, Craven’s Scream series was a box-office sensation. In those scare-’em-ups, he spoofed the teen horror genre. The movies frequently referenced other horror movies.

Craven’s first feature film was The Last House of the Left, which he wrote, directed and edited in 1972. A rape-revenge movie, it appalled some viewers while generating big box office. Next came another film he wrote and helmed, The Hills Have Eyes (1977).
He invented the youth horror genre again in 1984 with the classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, which he wrote and directed.

He conceived and co-wrote Elm Street III as well, and then after not being involved with the three more sequels, deconstructed the genre a decade after the original, writing and directing Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, which was nominated as best feature at the 1995 Spirit Awards.

His own Nightmare players, Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon, played themselves in the film.

In 1996 Craven reached a new level of success with the release of Scream. The film, which sparked the phenomenal trilogy, grossed more than $100 million domestically, as did Scream 2 (1997).

Between Scream 2 and Scream 3, Craven, offered the opportunity to direct a non-genre film for Miramax, helmed Music of the Heart (1999), a film that earned Meryl Streep an Academy Award nomination for best actress in the inspirational drama about a teacher in Spanish Harlem.

“We had a very difficult time getting an audience into a theater on my name,” he once said about that film. “In fact, we moved toward downplaying my name a lot on Music of the Heart. The more famous you are for making kinds of outrageous scary films, the crossover audience will say, ‘I don’t think so.’”

Also in 1999, in the midst of directing, he completed his first novel, The Fountain Society, published by Simon & Shuster.

Craven again pushed his genre boundaries with the 2005 psychological thriller, Red Eye, starring Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy and Brian Cox. And in 2006 he wrote and directed a romantic comedy homage to Oscar Wilde featuring Emily Mortimer and Rufus Sewell as a segment in the French ensemble production, Paris Je T’aime.

Craven then produced remakes of The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and The Last House on the Left (2009). Craven’s most recent written and directed film, My Soul to Take (2010), marked his first collaboration with Labunka, who also produced Scream 4.

He directed several other thrillers and horror movies including Swamp Thing (1982), Deadly Friend (1986) and The People Under the Stairs (1991).

Craven had recently signed an overall television deal with Universal Cable Productions and had a number of TV projects in development including The People Under the Stairs with Syfy Networks, Disciples with UCP, We Are All Completely Fine with Syfy / UCP, and Sleepers with Federation Entertainment.

He also was executive producing the new Scream series for MTV.

Craven had recently written atnd was to direct the Thou Shalt Not Kill segment for The Weinstein Co.’s Ten Commandments miniseries for WGN America.

He is listed as an executive producer of The Girl in the Photographs, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month.

Wesley Earl Craven was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Cleveland. His father died when he was 5. Raised in a strict Baptist household, he graduated from Wheaton College with degrees in English and psychology, then earned a masters in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins.

He briefly taught English at Westminster College and was a humanities professor at Clarkson College, where he served as a disc jockey for the campus radio station.

Craven had an eye for discovering fresh talent. While casting A Nightmare on Elm Street, he discovered Johnny Depp. He cast Sharon Stone in her first starring role, for Deadly Blessing, and he gave Bruce Willis his first featured role in an episode of the 1980s version of The Twilight Zone.

He wed Labunka in 2004, his third marriage. Survivors also include his sister Carol, son Jonathan, daughter Jessica, grandchildren Miles, Max and Myra-Jean and stepdaughter Nina.

Craven was a nature lover and committed bird conservationist, serving as a longtime member of the Audubon California Board of Directors. He penned a monthly column, “Wes Craven’s The Birds,” for Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.

“I come from a blue-collar family, and I’m just glad for the work,” Craven said in an interview with writer-director Mick Garris in October. “I think it is an extraordinary opportunity and gift to be able to make films in general, and to have done it for almost 40 years now is remarkable.

“If I have to do the rest of the films in the [horror] genre, no problem. If I’m going to be a caged bird, I’ll sing the best song I can.

“I can see that I give my audience something. I can see it in their eyes, and they say thank you a lot. You realize you are doing something that means something to people. So shut up and get back to work.

Hulu Orders J.J. Abrams-led “11/22/63” thriller from Stephen King

Hulu has placed a direct-to-series order for “11/22/63,” a nine-hour adaptation of Stephen King’s time-travel novel about the Kennedy assassination, from J.J. Abrams and Warner Bros. Television.

The miniseries, based on King’s best-selling 2011 novel published by Simon & Schuster imprint Scribner, follows high school English teacher Jake Epping, who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on the fateful date in American history.

A premiere date for “11/22/63,” to be released as nine hour-long episodes, has not been set. Meanwhile, Hulu has not determined whether it will make the full series available exclusively to Hulu Plus subscribers, or whether some episodes will be free on Hulu.com.

Executive producers are King, Abrams through his Bad Robot Prods. (“Person of Interest,” “Fringe,” “Lost”), Bridget Carpenter and Bryan Burk. Carpenter will write the teleplay. Bad Robot’s Kathy Lingg is co-executive producer, and Athena Wickham is producer.

In announcing the pact, Stephen King said: “If I ever wrote a book that cries out for long-form, event-TV programming, ‘11/22/63’ is it. I’m excited that it’s going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team.”

The deal marks first original programming collaboration between Hulu and WBTV. Hulu will be the U.S. home for “11/22/63,” and Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution will distribute “11/22/63″ for the rest of the world.

The “11/22/63″ project for Hulu is a limited “event series,” but there will be opportunities for future subsequent seasons based on the story. Hulu’s pickup of “11/22/63″ stands to be a critical component in the streaming service’s ability to attract subscribers with high-profile originals, as it vies with the likes of Netflix and Amazon.com.

“J.J. Abrams and Stephen King are two of the most celebrated storytellers of our time, and we are excited to be working with them and Warner Bros. Television to bring this unique take on one of the most seminal historic events of the 20th century to Hulu,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP and head of content, said in a statement. “’11/22/63′ already resonated with audiences as a best-selling novel, and we are looking forward to bringing the riveting story to the screen.”

Erwich, prior to joining Hulu in April 2014, had overseen Warner Horizon Television development, production and business operations.

Stephen King has published more than 50 books over a career spanning four decades, which have been adapted for movies and TV series more than 50 times. Repped by Paradigm, King is currently an executive producer of CBS series “Under the Dome,” based on his novel of the same name.

Filmmaker and producer J.J. Abrams is currently writing, producing and directing Disney’s “Star Wars: Episode VII,” slated for 2015 release, as well as producing the next installments of the “Mission: Impossible” and “Star Trek” movie franchises. “I’ve been a fan of Stephen King since I was in junior high school,” Abrams said in a statement. “The chance to work with him at all, let alone on a story so compelling, emotional and imaginative, is a dream.”

Carpenter’s TV credits include writing/executive producing Sundance Channel’s “The Red Road,” writing/co-executive producing NBC’s “Parenthood” and “Friday Night Lights,” and writing/co-producing Showtime’s “Dead Like Me.”  She called Stephen King “one of my literary heroes” and said creating the miniseries is “a dream come true. My dad, a lifelong Stephen King fanatic, still cannot believe it.”

Hulu is owned by 21st Century Fox, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Disney.

Pushing Daisies to Make a Comeback?

Were you a fan of Pushing Daisies, the 2007 ABC series that was canceled prematurely in part due to the 2007-2008 writers strike? If so, there may be some hope to rejoice.

Creator of Pushing Daisies Bryan Fuller announced that he is hoping to bring the entire cast back together for a couple of projects. Fuller states in his interview, “I’ve had conversations very recently with Barry Sonnenfeld about financing a film, and with Kristin Chenoweth and Warner Brothers about developing a stage musical.” In addition, he also spoke of a Pushing Daisies return of sorts, “We’re working on something that is definitely a Pushing Daisies revival, and the idea would be to have as many cast as we can to participate in it.”

Pushing Daisies only lasted two seasons before it’s early cancellation by ABC, but managed to be nominated for 17 Emmy Awards (winning seven) before it’s ultimate demise.

I was a fan of the series and hated how early it was cancelled. Rather than a return to TV or a film, I myself am hoping for maybe a Netflix series, not unlike what was done with Arrested Development. This would definitely allow more creative license and of course binge watching at it’s best.

Netflix for TV Gets a Makeover

Netflix logoJust in time to watch the doors shut for good on Blockbuster, Netflix is beginning it’s roll out on a brand new look for Netflix on your Television. The new look, that Netflix says is “The biggest update in Netflix history to our TV experience” will begin it’s debut today on some devices.

This update, which Netflix says has been in the works for over a year in a half, will work on Roku, newer gaming consoles and other devices such as Smart TV and Blu-Ray players. “Our members collectively watch more than a billion hours of Netflix a month, most of that is on a TV,” Netflix’s chief product officer Neil Hunt said in a statement. Netflix aims to make that content easier to find.

The new update, using Javascript, will allow more devices to use the new interface and allows Netflix to roll out updates easier in the future. Most devices will see the update on their device within a couple of weeks, however older devices make take a few months to get updated.

What do you think? Did you find it hard to find content you wanted to watch on Netflix? Looking forward to the new update? Let us know in the comments below!

Soaps AMC and OLTL To Be Relaunched On Hulu & iTunes

huluAn agreement has been reached, soap fans! All My Children and One Life to Live will return and they will return online. Hulu and iTunes have been made a part of the agreement that will give soap fans access to their favorite soaps. Production will commence soon and new episodes will be available as early as Spring 2013.

Prospect Park CEO Jack Kwatinetz said in a statement released Friday afternoon

“Hulu’s reach, platform and advertising prowess are best in class, and iTunes provides an incredible way to buy TV shows that is second to none. Through both of these partners, we hope daytime drama fans are absolutely delighted to be able to watch their favorite programs in a broadcast-quality HD format wherever and whenever they want.”

It appears that the goal for the relaunch is to blend in “new themes, fresh stars and youthful energy with the familiar actors and writers who made these shows must-watch afternoon viewing for legions of loyal fans.”

Rejoice soap fans, some of your favorites live on in this ever changing daytime TV landscape.

All My Children is Ending! Make Your Predictions!!

As the classic daytime soap, All My Children, is wrapping up their story after over three decades of daytime drama. We want to hear what YOU think about how this story is going to come to a close.

We have many scenario’s. Is Dixie back? How many times can they kill her? What about the “fake” Erica Kane, aka “Jane”. She is in love with the evil David Hayward. Even Jane is such a handful being the fake Erica, that Hayward is feeling suffocated.

Will Tad and Cara make it to the end of the story? With the shadow of Dixie hanging around the story line, is it an illusion, a dream, or a reality?

Jake would like to have a child with his wife Amanda, but there is a dark secret that lingers between her little affair with JR. Will this secret ruin everything between JR/Marissa and Jake/Amanda?

Jackson and the Kane girls are very confused at Erica’s behavior. They have yet to find out that Erica is really her kidnapper Jane.

Do you like Madison’s new bold look? Will it work for Fusion? Where will this take the story to the end?

Bianca let Marissa, JR’s ex wife, know her affectionate feelings towards her. Marissa pulled back. However, Marissa found out that the tactics that JR had been using to reel Marissa back into his life were coming from advice from Bianca. Will Marissa and Bianca end up being a couple in the end?

Griffin missed his plane out of the country on purpose and makes his move on Kendall. FINALLY!

Give us your thoughts and predictions on where this story is going and how it will end! There is not much time left!!!

The Yak looks forward to your thoughts!

Flashback! TeenNick to Air Their Old 90’s Shows!

Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order? Yep, you heard right, those old 90’s Nick sitcoms that you remember growing up (or like me, remember playing in the background as your kids watched them) are coming back this fall on Teen Nick! All That, Clarissa Explains it All, Kenan and Kel, Rugrats, The Amanda Show and more are returning this fall, and will be played, like Nick at Nite, from Midnight to 2am. Nickelodeon got the idea by seeing all the interest on social media sites in the old programming, with million of fans liking the pages devoted to the old shows. I know my son will be pleased!

“At the time, we were completely devoted to that audience ages 9, 10, and 11,” Keith Dawkins, senior VP and general manager of TeenNick said. “It was ground-breaking and for the young viewers, a powerful and pivotal time in their lives. Those kids who are now 22, 23 and 24 want to bring that back.” Course, my son is only 18, but I remember him watching these shows, so I think Teen Nick may be being stingy on their age ranges.

TeenNick is calling it “retro”, but I myself prefer not to call the 90’s retro just yet thank you very much! The network also hopes to be able to also showcase their 90s movies in that time block in the future as well.

Amanda please! What do you think? Excited? Have kids that will be excited? Let us know below!

Streamers and Instant Watchers Unite!

With the interest in streaming TV Shows and Movies picking up, and Televisions, boxes and gaming systems joining the wifi train, I thought it a good idea to post the “what’s new” and “Coming soons” in Instant TV. Here at YakkityYaks, you will find the coming soon to Netflix (with the dates) and any big news in the instant streaming world, I will also let you know.

I joined the masses not all that long ago, and told my cable company to come pick up their equipment, leaving me with a Tivo and Netflix. Sure, I still have to pay the cable bill, but not nearly the amount they are used to getting out of me each month. Each “DVR” box of theirs costs close to $20 (the box, the remote, and the “dvr service”) and the movie channels between $10-$15 each. Canceling those has since saved me $67! (I had two of those DVRs and two movie channels.) I am paying for the Tivo service, and Netflix however, which adds up to about $20 per month, so add that, and I saved close to $50. Now, eventually, I am planning on doing away with cable all together and just going back to antenna, AND porting over my home phone to Google (for a one time $20 fee) but that’s a whole different story… we will save that experience for a later date.

There are so many ways now that you can get the stream to your television, you probably already own something that will do it for you. The cable companies are definitely falling behind in this arena. It seems to me that they really need to just give in to this new revolution, and provide this access themselves. Instead, they are fighting it more and more each day. This is precisely why you hear and read about cable companies trying to charge you for bandwidth use. They want to have the ability to raise your rates if you are a streamer, hoping people will drop it. With 3g, 4g and fios entering the markets soon, it is just another mistake the cable companies will make.

The news coming from the cable heads are downplaying just how many are leaving as of late, but the numbers are high. It has been reported that people that have dropped cable have not picked up elsewhere. The growth in Satellite has not kept up with the numbers cable have lost. The News and the big television providers have said it was “because of the recession.” Yes, I do believe that may be a piece in the puzzle. People just can’t afford nor justify the high rise in television costs, while most of us remember it being free. People are irritated with channels going black in negotiations when if they were attached to an antenna on the roof, it would still be on, and free. People are sick and tired of the infomercials that show ALL NIGHT. People are getting tired of the rhetoric provided on the cable “news” shows, which have become, not news at all, but all commentary shows. People are tired of the quality of programming put on by the bigger cable channels. (Think MTV Skins.) The list goes on. People are leaving the TV providers in droves, and the providers keep telling themselves it’s the recession.

Well, keep telling yourselves that guys, while I watch the newest releases on Netflix.

Stay tuned to YakkityYaks where will begin providing a calender for new Netflix Instant Watch Releases, plus any news in the Instant Watch arena.

Regis Philbin Retiring

Veteran broadcaster Regis Philbin is retiring from his weekday talk show. Philbin made the announcement at the start of Tuesday morning’s “Live With Regis and Kelly,” which he has hosted for more than a quarter-century, most recently sharing hosting duties with Kelly Ripa.

Philbin said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer, but he didn’t specify a departure date.
“I don’t want to alarm anybody,” he began, then declared, “This will be my last year on the show.”

“It’s been a long time. It’s been 28 years,” he continued, “and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, you know, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it. …

“There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera — especially certain old people!” cracked Philbin, who is 79.

“I think I can only speak for America and all of us here,” responded Ripa, “when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true. And I wish I could do something to make you change your mind.”
“Now wait a minute,” Philbin said slyly.

Nothing was said about the future of the show after Philbin’s exit, or what the future holds for Ripa, who is currently marking a decade as Philbin’s co-host.

I would imagine, however, that Regis will pop up in a lot of places in the future, be it a game show, or a guest/skit on Letterman.
