Work In Progress (WIP) – The Series.*

Wepbanner

Watch out kids, there is a new show coming to a web browser near you! It is a fem driven; lighthearted, comedic web series that promises to delve into the hearts and lives of four (as women tend to be) really complex female characters.  “Work In Progress”, is a show about four sexy and smart thirty-something women who are supposed to have it all figured out — but these women prove that being beautiful, smart and savvy isn’t always that easy.  Four very diverse friends, all in different stages of their individual lives: married, divorced, pregnant, and career building, all help each other through the challenges they face — and with Los Angeles as the backdrop, they explore life through their relationships and jobs, so what could possibly go wrong?  Well we must tune in to find out!

“Work In Progress” appears to have the resume on paper – umm, I mean – the screen; appearing is an awesome cast of veteran actors who have collectively appeared in a multitude of network, cable and feature films — beginning with our leading ladies: Marquita Terry (USA High, Malibu CA & Common Law) as Peyton Nicholson,  Kristen Miller (Malibu Shores, USA High, That’s My Bush & She Spies) as Chloe Grey,  Jen Drohan (American Horror Story, Big Bang Theory, Numbers & Dog With A Blog) as Paige Turner, Vinessa Antione (Soulfood, Being Erica, Heartland & Haven) as Tracey Grant and supporting cast, Dawn Joyal (The Middle & Inverse) as Fern and Richard T. Jones (Judging Amy, Girlfriends, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicals, Nikita and Hawaii Five-O) as RJ Nicholson and helmed by Directors, Mary Lou Belli (Second Generation Wayans, Reed Between The Lines & Girlfriends) Episodes 1-3 and Marc Cadieux (Tom Waits: Real Gone European, Orphan’s and The Glitter and Doom tours & Bridges Over Troubled Waters) episode 4 & 5, have all come together to introduce a celebration of friendship, fashion, and phases of life, in this relatable, mockumentary style comedy. Poking fun at everything from parenthood to pop culture this series vows to embrace the truth and comfort in the continual growth and submission to being a work in progress. They’ve come together, bringing their talents to WIP where they exhibit a chemistry that shows strive for.

There is a lot of “F’s” here people so brace yourselves: friendship, fun, faith, friction, fashion, and four fab women – whew! To wrap it up, this show proves that even through the ups and downs, the 30’s is when life starts getting good, one has just gotta find comfort in and accept that, we’re all just a “work in progress”!

Check back with the Yak for the premiere date, but first here’s a little taste of what’s to come.

Tech Tuesday: Comcast, Fox and Hulu

You know I have been one of the biggest cheerleaders of cutting the cable cord. It’s difficult with the networks and big cable companies trying very hard to thwart any progress in that area, rather than coming up with ways to embrace the new technology. Netflix, Hulu, Roku’s free channels, TV HD Antenna’s, a computer hooked directly to the TV, all the ways in which many have deployed cutting the cord. (Course, we need to keep the internet!) Hulu appears to now be having to give in to the big boys. How disappointing.

I understand why cable companies have been fighting so hard. They are set to lose a ton of business. It’s their own fault really, with their prices going up, up, up. Every year we get a new notice of price increases. The blame, cable companies say, are the rising costs of content. You know, the dreaded negotiations they go through every year or so, with threats of cutting off channels. They say that, but then, I’m sure their humongous bottom line doesn’t suffer, only our pockets. If it indeed is a huge raise in content fees from major networks, then call their bluff and let them go. Yes, I know the call centers would be inundated with complaints, but what the heck, hold your ground to save our pockets. The content providers will come back. Think of the advertising they would lose in those major markets.

It always amazed me, when I worked for the cable company long long ago, the customers that would call in about the negotiations. I specifically remember the Fox negotiations. First, Fox News wasn’t a part of the negotiation at the time. That channel was to stay on the air regardless, so those complaints were moot. Second, people would say they would take their business elsewhere (Dish, DirecTv or what not) when as soon as the cable negotiations were through, the negotiations would start up with one of the other providers. Now, you would have quit cable, gotten into a contract with a satellite provider with a 1-2 year contract, and still possibly lost the channel they were fighting for, with no way to escape, no threats to leave (without paying a large sum of money.) In addition, the Network and Cable company would put it out there that you would be losing your local channel. Well, with a really cheap antenna, you could just hook it up to your TV and get that for free… so I never understood that argument or threat.

Now, according to the New York Post, Hulu appears to be poised to go by way of the big boys, and turn itself into a platform kind of like “HBO-GO.” Not by choice of course, but again, because of a Network. Fox is currently re-negotiating it’s deal with Comcast in a way that would require Hulu users to prove they already subscribe to Comcast to access it’s content. Basically, users would have to log in to Hulu using their Comcast logins rather than use their Hulu ID to view any content provided by Fox.

There is an easy way around this of course. If you want to watch a Fox broadcast from your local channel, then get a digital antenna. They are as cheap as $20 and then all your local stations are free. Most of what I watch are on those channels anyway. (The Amazing Race, Big Brother, etc.) Get yourself a DVR, Tivo is a good one (although there is a subscription involved, much cheaper than cable still) and watch when you feel like it. You already pretty much have do that with CBS, who doesn’t provide much if any of their content to Hulu, although will stream it on their website the next day.

The big cable companies will be fighting tooth and nail to keep our money, and the content providers will continue to fight for their bottom line as well. Of course they will, they are in the business to make money, no fault in that. Course we are, as we should be, in a fight to keep our own pockets filled as well. The dream of having the cable companies providing you an “a-la-mode” selection of channels will never happen, so you can give up that dream. Will the Premium channels ever provide an outside of cable way to subscribe to them? That looks bleak at the moment as well. I’m actually surprised the networks haven’t embraced more the Hulu model, forcing us to watch the commercials we can otherwise skip with our DVR.

Who knows what the future holds. The cable companies and networks will continue to fight all the way… but it will be the people that (somewhat) win this eventually if we demand it. Heck, TV used to be free… remember that? The companies made their money off of advertising (that we are skipping now.) How many times have your strolled through all those channels you pay for thinking “so many channels, nothing to watch” or better yet, perused the channels late at night when you couldn’t sleep and discovered that most of these channels you pay for have turned into very long commercials? Do we really need all these choices? Is it worth $150 to $200 for that one or two shows you like on cable? Let’s do the math on it. Let’s say you watch two shows, on once a week on a cable channel, and let’s say your current cable plan costs $150. Each episode costs you, basically, $18.75. Personally, I think not. I missed them when I first did the cut, and yeah, every once in awhile I miss them still, but for the most part, I’m over it. That’s 3 Venti Vanilla Lattes for me, or a movie night out, PER EPISODE. I’m good with that.

Have you cut the cable cord? Considering it? Leave us a comment below!

Webtastic Wednesday!

It’s Webtastic Wednesday! This is the day the Yak shares what he has found most interesting on the web recently. Enjoy!

We all got stuff.

Are you looking to get new stuff, swap some old stuff, or just do something with your stuff? Are you tired of all the Craigslist crap, the Newspaper Classifieds or the ebay fees and shipping? Well, look no further, there are new sites popping up to help!

First up is Pawn Go. Pawn go is an online Pawn Shop, as the name implies, and allows you to do all your pawn dealings from the comfort of your own home. You can pawn for a loan, getting your items returned to you at the end of the term, or just straight pawn your stuff, up to you. In this economy, I would imagine pawn shops are doing pretty good business.

Swap.com is, well, a swapping site. You enter what you have, and what you want, and they match you up with someone who wants what you have and has what you want. It’s that simple. There are however, shipping fees, but you can search local to avoid that.

U-Exchange: So imagine that you are looking for someone to paint your house, and you are, say, an accountant. Enter U-Exchange. You just put in what you do, what you want done, and that’s where the matches begin. Are you willing to do the taxes of Joe Bob the Painter, in return for him painting your house? There are no fees associated with this site (unless the exchange includes property), they make their money off Ads. Nice way to save.

Hackers Hackers Hackers

Whether you agree with it or not, hackers have been doing some notorious scandalous things as of late.

The Hacker group ‘Anonymous’ recently attacked the San Francisco Bay Area’s Rapid Transit website, in reaction to them shutting down cell phone and wifi service during a protest over a police shooting in the area. However, unknown hackers have now taken it a step further. So much so that the group ‘Anonymous’ do not want anything to do with it. These new, unknown hackers have broken into the Bay Area’s Rapid Transit (BART) Police database, and have posted all their info online. This means Police Officer’s names, e-mails, password, home addresses, phone numbers etc. are available for all to see. According to BART, they have forwarded all evidence to the FBI.

Speaking of hacking, be careful who you steal from! Recently, someone stole a laptop. Yeah, happens every day right? Well, this laptop belonged to a hacker. Actually, to a man named Greg Martin, an IT Security Specialist who used to work for the FBI and NASA. Well, Greg had recently installed some tracking software called PREY, a FREE open source program on his Macbook. According to the website, the software “lets you keep track of your phone or laptop at all times, and will help you find it if it ever gets lost or stolen.” Within two days, Greg knew pretty much everything about his thief, including his name, school, address, IP, and even his Facebook ID number. He passed this info to the cops, who raided the guys place, and back came Greg’s Macbook. WTG Greg!

When was I in New York?

Apparently, I was in New York a few days ago, and I was just driving along, minding my own business. I was apparently going way too fast too, and the NYC Police nabbed me, electronically… or so says the e-mails I keep receiving. The e-mails have an attachment (that includes a nice little bonus trojan) all about the ticket I got, according to the e-mail. Course I haven’t opened the attachement so other than the trojan, I couldn’t tell you about any other contents. So, for further reference, don’t open any attachments talking about your New York Speeding ticket.

Another one making the rounds appears to be from UPS. The e-mail address is almost the same as the one above (from New York) and tells you your “parcel” has been shipped, and to open the attachment for details. No one will send you something like this with an attachment. It will always be a link to the UPS website, or the store website you purchased your item from, so don’t open that one either, unless by parcel, they meant trojan, and you want one.

Wikileaks

I will leave you this week with this. You decide what you think.

Tech Tuesday! Get All Caught Up in One Day!

It’s Tech Tuesday! Here are your quick little tech updates, all in one place!

Netflix: Streaming, Charging and the Kiddos

Let’s begin with Netflix. As you may already know, Netflix is raising their prices for their streaming/DVD out plans. Well, this is our way of reminding those of you that wanted to switch their plans before the changes take affect, better get to it. The price change takes affect for current subscribers on September 1st. Time to get those DVD’s back you had sitting around for months! I myself am canceling the DVD Service, and will just stick to streaming. If something new comes to DVD that I just have to see, then I guess RedBox will be getting my business. In the meantime, for the geeks out there, check out the nifty PBS Documentaries Netflix has streaming. I can vouch for the FDR and Huey Long Docs as being pretty interesting.

Another Netflix note: Netflix is currently testing a “Just for Kids” interface that will allow kids to browse for streaming content by character. Users that were selected for this beta test will notice a new tab on the main menu of their accounts located between the “Watch Instantly” and “Browse DVDs” tabs. Clicking the characters will bring up choices that feature that character. Sounds pretty great for parents who have to shuffle the kids around on errands. No word when it will be available to all.

iReadersDigest, iPad 3, iPhone 5 = iWantThemAll

Starting in September, Readers Digest will launch it’s digital subscription just for iPad users. Print subscribers will be able to receive their first 6 months free, but thereafter, will have to pay the regular non-print subscriber rate of $1.99 per issue, or $14.99 for the year. I know, you younger set think Readers Digest is just so old school, but I still subscribe, if only for the short articles that you can read when, well, you know when. Is the iPad about to take over the bathroom magazine rack?

Speaking of the iPad, rumor has it the next iPad version, iPad 3, is scheduled for release around February, 2012. Yep, right after Christmas, just like the iPad 2. I’m not real sure why Apple keeps pushing the latest and greatest AFTER the holidays, but I am assuming it’s to try and get rid of it’s previous version inventory as quickly as possible. I won’t make that mistake again. (Damn you iPad original!)

Which leads us to Apple, again. Did you run out and grab the iPhone 4? Well, of course, here comes iPhone 5. It’s just a rumor for now, but a report stemming from a Japanese website puts September 8th as the next Apple Media Event Day, which they believe Apple will launch the iPhone 5. Although in the past, Apple traditionally released their newer version of iPhone at the summer Worldwide Developers Conference, they didn’t this year, leaving speculation that Apple will announce at the September Media Day, usually reserved for their new iPod releases.

Mice!

Since Apple’s “Magic Mouse” has been released, it doesn’t seem like companies have been paying that close attention to that little gadget we use every day, until now. Two mice have hit the market recently, and both are very interesting, in their own very unique ways.

First the Microsoft Touch Mouse. Exclusive to Windows 7, this mouse scrolls like a dream. A three finger swipe will minimize all your windows, the two finger swipe will minimize the window you are in. The biggest difference between this mouse and the Apple version however is it’s feel. Testers say this mouse fits in your hand perfectly.

Our next mouse innovation is the USB Optical Mouse with Pocket Digital Scale. Yeah, you heard me. A mouse with a mini scale built in. The mouse offers a precise scale with a range of 0.1 to 500 grams allowing you to weigh small objects laying around on your desk. Perfect for the jewel thief or drug dealer on your Christmas List. http://usb.brando.com/usb-optical-mouse-with-pocket-digial-scale_p02420c037d15.html

Bedphones

Can you just see the informercial for these? Picture a man, tossing and turning dramatically in bed, trying to listen to music to sleep by. His ears aching for the dastardly large headphones he is wearing. Introducing Bedphones! The amazingly thin and tiny headphones designed to put you to sleep. That’s right, for only $29.95 you too can stop that horrible ear ache you get from those unsightly headphones you use when trying to sleep. They are less than 1/4″ thick and about as round as a penny. They ear hooks are made from moldable memory wire for all your comfort needs. The headphones are compatible with all devices that have a standard headphone jack, and come with a Satin eye mask and a travel case. Course if there were an infomercial for these, getting the eye mask and travel case would mean you would have to call within the next 15 mins… Aside from the corny infomercial we may see in the near future, these are pretty cool.

Yo 911. Cn u hlp me plz?

FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, announced a plan last Wednesday to update the 911 technology to include texts, photos and videos, along with a way to track the location of such communication. 911 Operators think this is a great idea, but without a way to track where the text or video came from, it will be useless. The Chairman is trying to implement that feature first.

That’s it for this week! Are you going to grab the iPhone 5 or the iPad 3? Are you cancelling Netflix because of the price hike? Let us know below!

The Yak Has Your Back!

Here at the Yak, we are ALWAYS thinking of you, and how to make your life easier. Well, we came across this simple little tip today, and thought what the heck, let’s share! Hey, even I had to grab a shoe and try it after watching this. Kinda like after reading that e-mail about how no one can lick their elbow… well you get the picture. Anyway, check this out!

Tech Tuesday: Facebook Sharing, More Than Just Your Info

Tech Tuesday – Facebook Warning, as Usual. Actually, more than one Facebook warning today.

Facebook to Share Users Info

No, this is not something that was posted by your friend a year ago, then reposted, and copied, and passed on. This is a true news story updated today. You may see it in your feed soon I’m sure, but note this is new, and not a repost of a repost of a repost.

Facebook is moving forward with it’s plan, albeit controversial, to give 3rd party developers access to all of FB users phone numbers and home addresses.

As you may remember, Facebook announced their new policy in their own devolper blog back in January. Three days later however, they suspended the plan because of user outcry, but promising users they would see it’s return in a few weeks. (They of course called it an “improved feature”. Improved for them maybe!)

Two congressman, Representatives Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) wrote to Facebook, expressing concern over the new functionality. Facebook responded, reaffirming that it will be allowing third parties to request access to users’ addresses and phone numbers.

Facebook did note however that it is considering implementing controls that would, in more detail, highlight the exact personal info that’s being transmitted to third parties and also said it is “actively considering” whether to restrict users under 18 years old from sharing their contact information.

“We expect that, once the feature is re-enabled, Facebook will again permit users to authorize applications to obtain their contact information,” Facebook’s Marne Levine, vice president of global public policy, wrote in the letter to Reps. Markey and Barton. “However, we are currently evaluating methods to further enhance user control in this area.”

Make you feel better? Me neither.

Facebook has been pushing it’s members to share more and more information for a long time, both on Facebook, and off. Privacy issues have always been at the forefront with it’s members, and we have, in the past, seen a retreat whenever FB starts talking about controversial privacy sharing. However this time, they aren’t backing down.

In addition, removing that information now, in hopes of avoiding such sharing, may already be too late.

Think you have taken all the precautions? Removed your phone number? Removed third party applications? Think again. You know for sure they have your e-mail address, since you need to provide that upon signing up. Have you signed any petitions that showed up in your feed? Well, there’s your name, maybe even an address, or at least your Zip code. Looking you up from there isn’t too difficult. Buy anything from any of the games you have played on there? There’s your name, billing address, maybe phone number, credit card…

Think we have the whole behind the scenes story and you are protected? Yeah right. Facebook makes a load of money in Advertisement. All Ads are brought to you by the things you do on there AND off, and what your friends do around the internet. Those “like” buttons on all those external pages just adds another note in the database about you and your political affiliation, religious views, likes and dislikes, purchase habits, family status, tastes, etc. etc. etc. Clicking on a link you see in your feed to an external site… do you think Facebook didn’t just follow you there?

Study: Facebook Linked to One in Five Divorces in the United States

Another “duh” moment. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers recently conducted a Survey that found that out of every 5 divorces in the United States, Facebook is cited in at least one of them. Yes, one in five. Also, according to the report, more than 80 percent of divorce lawyers reported a rising number of people are using social media to engage in extramarital affairs.

“We’re coming across it more and more,” said licensed clinical psychologist Steven Kimmons, Ph.D., of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. “One spouse connects online with someone they knew from high school. The person is emotionally available and they start communicating through Facebook. Within a short amount of time, the sharing of personal stories can lead to a deepened sense of intimacy, which in turn can point the couple in the direction of physical contact.”

Of course strained marriages were more vulnerable to it (of which there were more with the recession) but according to Kimmons, there didn’t need to be any previous marital problems for an online relationship to blossom into a full-fledged affair. “I don’t think these people typically set out to have affairs,” said Kimmons, who also practices therapy and marriage counseling. “A lot of it is curiosity. They see an old friend or someone they dated and decide to say ‘hello’ and catch up on where that person is and how they’re doing.”

It all comes down, he says, to the amount of time and contact two people have with one another in any type of relationship, including online. The more time people have, the more likely the relationship grows. “If I’m talking to one person five times a week versus another person one time a week, you don’t need a fancy psychological study to conclude that I’m more likely to fall in love with the person I talk to five times a week because I have more contact with that person,” Kimmons said.

Kimmons offers safeguards as well, like sharing passwords with one-another, setting limits to online time (such as not being online at 2am alone) and being your own watchdog about who you are connecting with. For instance, “Look at the population of the people who are your online friends,” Kimmons said. “Is it a good mixture of men and women? Do you spend more time talking to females versus males or do you favor a certain type of friend over another? That can tell you something about how you’re using social networks. You may not even be aware that you’re heading down a road that can get quickly get pretty dangerous, pretty fast to your marriage.”

Kimmons also says it’s good to spell out from the get go to your online friends exactly what you are looking for. “From the start tell your online friend that you’re not looking for anything more than establishing old contacts with people to find out how they’re doing.” Otherwise, your friend may get the wrong idea or notion, as eventually, you might.

Oh well. Most people I talk to just blame it on the evils of the internet. For many, it’s a throw up your hands moment and say ‘whatever.’ Just another downfall of being online. I ask though, is it? Should it be? Should we just sit back and allow companies to share our info, or online life to destroy our marriages? Should we all re-read Orwell’s ‘1984’ just one more time, or am I over-reacting? I do that you know.

Now, go “like” us on Facebook, since you know you aren’t deleting your account anytime soon anyway. Then, let us know what you think below, you know, where we WON’T be sharing your info. We will also try not to break up your marriage, although Yak Addiction is known to run rampant around these parts. Be careful.

Tech Tuesday: Google, Hulu and Twits!

Welcome to another edition of Tech Tuesday! Here are the top stories in the tech world you may have missed!

Google Logo: Diver Down!

Honoring Jules Verne, the French author who pioneered the Science Fiction genre, Google has an interactive logo today that allows you to explore the depths of the sea.

Jules, best known for his classic novels ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’, ‘A Journey to the Center of the Earth’, and ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ was born on this day in 1828.

Check out the interactive logo HERE.

TwitPic Launches Video for Twitter

Twitpic is bringing support for video to Twitter today, allowing users to timely share their clips. Now, instead of posting your links to YouTube to spread your awesome vid, you can upload it over to Twitpic and share it immediately.

So be sure to tweet @yakkityyaks so we don’t somehow miss your video! Hey, if it’s a good one, it may just get notice on Webtastic Wednesday!

“The Social Break-Up” Study

A study that surveyed 1500 consumers on why they unsubscribe, unlike, or unfollow brands in the social media world was conducted, and the results are in! I would think this shouldn’t be surprising…

More than 90% say they they do it because of too frequent, irrelevant or boring communications. Of the 1500, 91% have opted out of e-mails, 81% have “unliked” on Facebook to remove the company from their News Feed, and 77% say they are just more cautious about who they share their information and e-mail with.

So, now that you have that shocking information (sarcasm), why don’t you go follow the Yak on Facebook and Twitter! We promise not to bore you, too much anyway, and we promise to NEVER share ANY of your information, including your e-mail address!

T-Mobile – All Phones FREE!

As part of a special Valentine’s Day promotion, T-Mobile will offer all of the phones in it’s inventory for free with a new 2 yr. contract this Friday and Saturday. (February 11th and 12th.)

This includes their high-end Smartphones, like the HTC HD7, the T-Mobile G2 and the Samsung Vibrant. You can see a list of all the offers on T-Mobiles website HERE.

These are huge savings, but just like all other companies, I’m sure you will still need to pay the sales tax based on the original price. To take advantage of their offer, you must go to a T-Mobile store. However, there will be some offerings online if you wish to order from the comfort of your home.

Care to guess if this is really just for Valentines Day, or could it be because the Verizon iPhone comes out this weekend? Hmmmm.

The Daily Show and The Colbert Report Returns to Hulu

Fans of Jon Stewart, Colbert and Hulu unite! Both shows are returning to a computer near you. Hulu closed a major deal with Viacom last week, and as part of the deal, a “selection of great current programming from MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, TV Land, BET, and other Viacom channel brands will also be added to Hili Plus.

What does this mean for us? Well, previously the two above shows were on Hulu (free) and have now moved to Hulu Plus. Hulu Plus is a subscription based service that currently costs $7.99 a month. It’s a nice add if you are thinking about cutting the cable cord and accessing HULU through other platforms attached to your TV.

Well there you have it, all caught up. So, what do you think? Will you subscribe to Hulu? Will you run out this weekend for a new T-Mobile phone? Will you @yakkityyaks your Twitpic video? Let us know below!

Tech Tuesday: Teacher’s Pets, Nintendo Disguises and Lobbyists!

Welcome to another ‘digest’ edition of Tech Tuesday, where you can read what went down in the world of technology for the week that you may have missed all in one short read! We have been told it’s even bathroom friendly!

Facebook Launching New Commenting System

Facebook is set to launch a new comment platform to rival the likes of Disqus and other third party platforms. What does this mean for you? Well, you already have the ability to comment on a page, such as YakkityYaks.com using your Facebook account, but this would allow so much more. For example, one would only have to log in once to the platform so as to not have to keep doing so site to site. It will also show all comments in a threaded format and be voted up (liked). Comments can also then be synced to the sites Facebook page (like ours) meaning that a comment made here, will also show up on our Facebook page and vice versa.

It’s interesting, and can eventually take Facebook from just a destination to total domination of your online experience, following you from site to site as you surf. Along with it, it will be able to track your online presence I would imagine. Facebook confirms it is working on a new commenting system, but says that it is an update to the existing plugin and not a new product. We shall see.

CSI Facebook Game Offers a Bonus

Thursday night’s episode of CSI will have a little extra for fans this week: clues to unlock in-game bonuses. Prior to the airing of the show, the Facebook Page for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Crime City will pose a question to fans that can only be answered by watching the episode. This new feature will run through sweeps, so basically, through February.

Grey’s Anatomy getting Interactive Viewing on iPad

Today, ABC released “Grey’s Anatomy Sync” for iPad, a free app the promises a more interactive TV viewing experience. The app is designed to be a companion to the show itself, and the first episode to utilize it will be run this Thursday, February 3rd. It will show interactive content in real time, based on what is happening on the show.

Called Grey’s Anatomy Sync, the App is powered by Nielsen’s Media-Sync Platform and will showcase interactive content using the microphone on the iPad to keep the app in sync with the show.

Using the audio allows the app to figure out where the user is in the program and offer up corresponding content. This also let’s those of us that record the show to still get the same interactive experience as if we were watching it live. Interesting concept that I think could grow into big time uses.

Google Dishes Out for Lobbyists

It has been learned that Google dished out an astounding $5.16 million dollars on lobbyists in 2010, a 29% increase over the $4 million they spent in the previous year.

What are they lobbying for? Well, issues like net neutrality, online privacy and online tracking. The money they spent in 2010 was more than Yahoo, Facebook and Apple spent combined.

The amount of money has some people worried, since the issues above are about YOUR privacy and online choices, and you can bet they aren’t on your side. The huge increase most definitely shows how Google is becoming more lofty in Washington, peddling their influence in policy decisions amongst the other oversized corporate big boys that don’t have your interest at heart.

Today’s Lesson: Be the Teacher’s Pet, even on Facebook

A High School student in California has been suspended from school after calling his teacher a “fat ass who should stop eating fast food, and is a douche bag.” The teacher did give him too much Biology homework apparently, so I guess it was called for?

Anyway, most believe that common sense dictates you just shouldn’t be doing that, however, a court ruling from last November had a federal agency declare that Facebook updates are protected speech, when a worker got fired for making derogatory remarks about their supervisor online. So, ACLU is taking a closer look.

Now, I agree that it should be protected speech, as long as it’s not threatening. However, the parent in me wants to smack the kid over the head and take away all things tech in his life for awhile, until he learns respect, manners, and to just stop being a (as “Red” would have called him on ‘That 70’s Show’)… a dumbass.

Cool Geek Gadget of the Week

Alright, I want one of these REAL bad. Yeah, it’s pretty geeky, but oh so cool. Is it an old NES Cartridge? No, it’s just a disguise! These are external 500gb or 1tb hard drives designed to look like the games of yore offered by 8BitMemory. They are nostalgic, they are useful, and they are geek to the maximum. For the younger crowd, they have Game Boy Advance 4gb Flash Drives. They even have gift packs, complete with a 500gb USB hard drive, mouse pad, cartridge sleeve and case. Perfect for the geek in all of us!

That’s it for this week’s Tech Tuesday! Anything I missed that you have seen? Are you already gone, buying an NES Hard Drive? Will Facebook take over the world? Will Google stop them with their lobbyists? Do you want to smack that kid over the head or do you want to post something about your boss/teacher/mother online? Did I ask enough questions? Sound off below!
